is it against the rules to work for another company whilst on a sabatical

i believe it is, paid anyway.
unless i suppose you give your reason for a sabbatical as got another job "want to see what it's like first before i jack ", and the firm say fair enough mate let us know how you get on will you, no pressure just when you're ready.

tax - well the reporting of earnings etc, national insurance etc.

unless you get a job at starbucks or costa or amazon or with gary barlow, as none of them pay tax
