What are Line Managers?

Since joining this forum i have heard a lot about line managers(mostly bad things)What i would like to know is what are they,what do they do and where do you find them?
I have been in this job 23 years and i had never heard of them before.Are they only to be found in big D.Os and mail centres?the biggest D.O i have worked in only had 35 staff and the one i am in now only has 30.

In the larger delivery offices there is a hierarchy of management filth, and the scum floats to the top. The flotsam and jetsam you see floating around the edges of the toilet bowl are line managers, whereas the turds in the middle of the bowl are the up and coming deputies.

Vaguely,were they a managment grade 1 to 4 with 4s getting small D.Os and overseeing the floors of bigger D.Os and also getting a smaller pay packet? Its all too confusing to me nowadays.I switched my mind off back in 1999 and just cannot get it going again.

I might well have been i wouldn't really know to be honest.Did we have a way forward agreement? The DoM was going on about accessing someone down at the stream with a pipeline the other day.I had absolutely no idea what he was saying but it sounds damn saucy.

They keep offices running smoothly with their exceptional man management skills. Everyone is treated fairly by line managers. They have no favourites and they are intimidated by no one. If you can't complete your delivery in the allotted time frame, that is always just fine and dandy. They will bring in cover to complete the walk or, if the situation requires, they will go out on the walk and complete it themselves.
