Wishful thinking if I was honest, but its only an opinion.

An overtime ban would impact disproportionately on part timers, in fact it would hit the least paid the hardest. For this reason alone I wouldn't like to see an overtime ban.

Other reasons:
1. It would cause a further divide between PTimers and FTimers, one which already exists, caused by RM, and an overtime ban would only make it worse.
2. Extremely hard to police especially in deliveries where its easy to get bags sent out and no one any the wiser.
3. Easy to circumvent by using plain clothes employees or new starters and pretending they are "managers" covering the cut offs.

Forgive my language by an overtime ban in deliveries (especially P&L) is a strike breakers dream.

It wouldn't work.
Agree with Teebs totally.

Plus, knowing that it was on it's way, or as a reaction to it, RM would just hire agency staff to cover what is left over. And we would probably end up prepping their work so they would get it easy why we end up essentially shafting ourselves.

I have a 25 hour contract and tend to work around 40-45 hours a week. I cannot afford to take part in an overtime ban. I live on overtime. I want a full-time contract but asking for one for the last four years just falls on deaf ears, both from the CWU & RM.

Pretty much case in point, this is exactly why an overtime ban is doomed to fail.
PT staff can't afford it, they need it to survive.

Don't think an OT ban would ever work, aside from PT staff needing it, there is just way too much scope for RM to work around it.
Leaving parcels, streaming, casual staff, the list is endless.

The main reason for strike action is to stop mail movement altogether, which unfortunately effects small businesses, but it is the outcry of small businesses to government that eventually creates a move in managements willingness to negotiate. Overtime bans do not clog up the system and small businesses will be able to collect their mail if they are that desperate. We cannot allow different parts of the business or business districts to come out on their own this time. It must be all or nothing in a constructed manner to create the most immediate impact and with a view to getting a fair and reasonable agreement in the quickest time possible.

Reg the ballot papers we got some of the p timers just put there's in the bucket and said I'm not interested . I can understand that to a degree ,but it's long term we've gotta think off too. Also once you get a vote on the jobs before going live ,what happens if its a no vote ,,do. They just force it in?

It's not a matter of tough s**t it's a matter of how long you can hold a strike together.
If it's going to be a short, sharp shock like 5 days all out then there won't be any overtime done during that period anyway but that's a risky scenario because members need to eat and Royal Mail knows that.

If it's going to be a long drawn out affair over months then you have far more chance of holding it solid if members have the chance to make up some of the lost pay between strikes doing overtime.

Yes it does lessen the effect of the strike but it's better than the whole thing caving in after 4 weeks because people are getting behind with the mortgage.
good times, bad times you know I've had my share
