Postal workers in the county could refuse to deliver competitors’ mail after union members voted to oppose privatisation.

Chad Croom, from the Oxfordshire branch of the Communication Workers Union, said: “A boycott could be the next thing, but we’ll have to wait and see.”

He said no date for action had been agreed.

Royal Mail spokesman Akudo Ike said: “Royal Mail is committed to seeking an agreement with the union on the way forward.”

Government plans to privatise the Royal Mail could be hit after a boycott by thousands of postal workers moved a step closer today.

Members of the Communication Workers Union have voted overwhelmingly in favour of supporting action.

Fearing the massive impact it would have, Royal Mail immediately secured a High Court undertaking from the union not to take any further steps pending another hearing next week.

The row could not have come at a worse time for the Government as it prepares for a pre-election sell-off of the firm, with a dispute with unions threatening to discourage private investors from getting involved.

But bosses appear to be on a collision course with the CWU after a massive 96% of members working for Royal Mail rejected privatisation in a ballot.

The result is despite suggestions that staff will get 10% of the business.

The ballot of 112,000 workers, which had a 74% turnout, revealed widespread anger.

They include the involvement of other postal firms which have secured bulk contracts to collect and sort mail from big companies, then leave for Royal Mail to deliver to homes.

The CWU warns it undermines the basis of the Royal Mail and the commitment to offering six-day-a-week deliveries to every address in the UK.

But Royal Mail argues access mail, as it is known, is vital to boosting the group’s finances.

It says a boycott, which it argues is unlawful, would simply drives customers into the arms of rivals or encourage more people and firms to use electronic mail instead.

Billy Hayes, CWU general secretary, said: “No-one has yet asked postal workers what they think about privatisation.

“Today postal workers have spoken loud and clear with a massive 96% roundly rejecting the Government’s plans to privatise Royal Mail.

“The workforce does not support the Government or Royal Mail on selling the company.

"This company is flourishing in public ownership as the recent doubling of profits proves.

"It’s becoming less clear what this policy is about. Why privatise this profitable company?

“Today’s ballot result shows we have resounding support for all the union’s policies.

"This is a strong message to take forward action in each area to improve the working lives of postal workers and protect the services and jobs which customers and communities value.”

Royal Mail has vowed to fight any boycott, adding: “All our employees must continue to handle all mail, deliver to the same high standards as normal and do the job that they are paid for, as stated in their contracts of employment.”

It went on: “Royal Mail operates in a very competitive market and customers can move their business very quickly.

"This could result in a significant loss of business.”

Business Minister Michael Fallon said: “I am disappointed that members of the CWU have come out against our plan to sell shares in Royal Mail this financial year. But this is only a consultative ballot, not a mandate for action.

“I will continue to meet the union to discuss our plans for Royal Mail, including the employee share scheme which is designed to give individual employees a real stake in the company and its future.”
