My 5 year old son has an appointment to see an ear specialist in mid August, I would like to go with my wife and son, I cant book the day off because its taken by someone else, can I take special leave, if yes what category is it?

Presumably you have tried to book the day off as annual leave, but unless you have pre-allocated leave blocks in August your chances of booking the day off this way would be very slim indeed. Could you maybe switch your days off that week with say your floater if you are a walk holder or vice versa? If it is not possible to switch with one of your colleagues, then I would imagine you could request special leave, but it would almost certainly be unpaid and you would more than likely need to support any application for special leave with hospital/doctors' notes.
