Missing packet, what next?

On return from my duty today the guy in the den asked me if i remember attempting to deliver a parcel to a certain address as they couldn't find it, they also had a photocopy of the p739 which was duly filled in by myself for the 3/6, in our office we fill in a manifest of all items returned to the office and on this date, i had not included this item. The only thing i can think of is that i saw the person at a later time on that date and gave them their parcel as i fill in the manifest at the end of the duty as all the time customers catch up with me for their slip left items as its an estate which is 1 way and circular. Anyhow im going to knock their door and ask if this was the case and possibly got mixed up.

What is the usual procedure for an item going missing?

If its a normal packet its not so bad. Its worth going back and checking though.

Another possibility is they came to the door after you had delivered the P739 and you forgot to ask for the card back.
Then the customer's wife/husband/child or even the customer sees the card at a later date and toddles off to collect a parcel they already have.
It's a surprisingly common occurrence in our locker.

Good luck! It is quite possible that you gave the item to a member of the household and then another member got hold of the card and went to collect; innocently or otherwise.

I am intrigued about you postmen filling a manifest of all returns to the office. I think it is a good idea (although adds more time) as we have found out in my office that a lot of items are now going missing with Paired working.

Having said the above, I do sincerely hope that there is always someone in the locker room when posties return otherwise it will be pointless as anyone can simply swipe a returned packet or letter as per the system we currently have in my office.

Lockers folks are gone by 2.00pm weekdays and by 1.15pm on saturday. But one now stays for a bit longer on Wednesdays. As for Saturday; it is a joke!

Yes the manifest is a pita to fill in but does help to keep order with the returned packets, our dom has only been in our office for 2-3 months and has amounted to 3 sackings/dismissals for various discrepencies and he has tried to do me for illegal tyres - which when measured were legal, so im assuming he will try and dish out the worst punishment possible.

I ALWAYS get the 739 back as FT said its common . The other one is when a neighbour comes out after you 739d a packet offering to take it in, i now say too late sorry as it can cause problems

how do they know you didnt hand the packet in ? it could have gone missing from the locker .. or could even still be in the locker placed in the wrong section

Very often..folk come down to collect items without their misplaced p739 cards..so as usual we ask for id...then hand their items over assuming they have been returned....a few days later you will see the same person...this time with their p739 card..looking for the same packet or whatever they collected a few days earlier....absent minded OR what?

must happen every other day at ours,
they got it after been carded and someone else in the home calls for it, or neighbour takes it after and you forget to leave a note, misplaced in locker, small one still in corner of van,
once i had one addressed to "the" high st, I'd wrote "high st" on 739, and they'd put on the "t" shelf,
sometimes if I'm in a good mood i also add a description on the 739, i.e amazon or very large box etc.
