having to pay another post person to complete my round

Hi All please could some one give me some advice,
i phoned the manager to say i was unable to attend work this morning as my wish bone on the car had snapped and had no way to get to work and needed to get the car sorted that day.

The manager arranged for me to get cover but told me i would have to pay his wages £60 for a 4 hour round ??????

The other post person has done the round and now wants payment is this my responsibility or royal mails ??

as its not in writing , i would say its down to him , but then you have the problem if the guy who coverd it doesn't get paid by royal mail. maybe speak with the guy who covered it and say if he's not paid within a month by royal mail your cover it .
In all honesty royal mail shouldn't have put you in this situation to start with ,and just put your duty out on o/t ,but this is the beast we now work for ,nothing is ever easy when your a postie

or if you dont get a satisfactory outcome, pay him what you would be paid which is 4 hours , NOT £60.

Wait a minute. How did the Op work out that it is a 4-hour job? A 4-hour delivery round is not a 4 hour job!

Anyway, the other postie also should never have agreed to such an arrangement - I am assuming he/she was told beforehand... The manager is an idiot - asking postie to collect money from each other when it was his job to sort things out. And by sorting out, payment up front from an absent postman is never a starting point.

An annual leave off, A special leave without pay, work your day off (preferable if possible) or a docked day absence (unauthorised?).

Normal organisation what probably ask you take a lieu day off. Royal Mail management don't have a Scooby about regulations so they make it up as they go. This is one of them. Tell them to pay them overtime to the individual.

Get your union guy involved. And tell your manager that it's the responsibility for RM to pay staff. Not you.

Sounds as if the DOM instructed the postie to deliver, therefore it should be his responsibility to pay him. If you agree then you should pay the DOM.

I would then ask for a receipt from the DOM showing all deductions.

There is no way in employment law that allows a manager to instruct one employee to pay another for doing any work.

Its an abuse of position.

If the OP failed to turn up for work, either for no good reason, or for a valid reason then there are processes in place to deal with both, the manager then manages the resultant "resource problem".

The ONLY way a manager would get involved in 2 posties paying for a delivery is if a postie asked them to do it. However, that would be naive of the requester and stupid in the extreme for the Manager. Especially because if for some reason the duty was not done then the Manager would be in the firing line for no resourcing correctly, or not notifying higher ups of a failure.

That's why I personally think its a wind up - would any manager be that stupid - possibly. But would a postie with even 6 months experience be that naive - I bloody well hope not.
