CHANGES are set to be made to postal deliveries in a Somerset town.

Royal Mail will be altering delivery methods and routes in Burnham over the next few weeks.

The firm says the changes are necessary to ‘modernise’ its operation.

A statement released by the firm said morning deliveries will continue and go on for a longer period during the day.

The time some households receive post will depend on where they live and may now be later or earlier.


A statement released by Royal Mail said: “The way in which we communicate with each other has changed dramatically.

“Unfortunately, fewer letters are now posted every day and Royal Mail needs to organise its delivery routes to be as efficient as possible.

“We also deliver an increasing number of larger items and so we are investing in new equipment to carry these items to customers even more securely.

“Postmen and women will use new delivery methods and adopt revised delivery routes as these changes are introduced on a phased basis.”

Fears late post could hit trade as Royal Mail warns of afternoon deliveries for Burnham and Highbridge

PEOPLE living in Burnham and Highbridge could soon be waiting until the afternoon for their daily postal delivery, Royal Mail has announced.

Under a restructuring plan being brought in this month, the postal service has warned some customers will no longer receive their post by lunchtime.

The new delivery routes will see 13,000 households in the towns and surrounding villages – postcodes TA8 and TA9 – affected.

Royal Mail says the changes are necessary because of an increase in the number of parcels being carried by posties, meaning delivery techniques – such as transporting post by bicycle – need to change.


Julian Frost, director of Abbott & Frost estate agents in College Street, Burnham, told the Weekly News he feared a later delivery time could harm business.

He said: “We currently get our post at about 9.30am and we do get a number of important items of mail like rental agreements being returned to us.

“A later delivery time would not help. I would like to see a return to the days of two deliveries – one at maybe 8.30am and the second at 11.30am.”

Every household and business in TA8 and TA9 should receive a letter from Royal Mail over the next few weeks explaining the changes.

Out of curiosity how long before or after a revision is this stranded statement typically made? Just wondering as Burnham went live on Monday
and its taken RM most of a week to inform residents and even then not directly via letter/D2D but by sticking in the local paper.
