Hiya guys just found out my best mate who serves in the army has aggressive cancer he has had serious operations and I would like to pop see him on 9th july for a week in germany. my manager at work is not the easiest guy to ask and I know Ill get no said to me because they are always quite a few off this week. its the only time I can go really because my parents can have the children.
just wondering if anyone can tell me where I stand with this

You don't have a right to go and see a best mate a family member maybe, and I would be amazed if any DOM (especially these days when they are all bred from a test tube in being w*****s)would give you time off...but you never know if you don't try etc etc.

How about telling your manager the situation first, you never know 
If he says no, ask to see the holiday rota for that week and you might be able to swop your leave with a colleague
