pigeons....and their muck....

doing some lapsing this week....on a block of flats where pigeons have coated the top floors in poo....some posties in the past have refused to deliver to these flats due to the amount of pigeon poo on steps/landings....mail has also been suspended at times when it has become so bad....today the sun was out....and most pigeons were out enjoying the sun as opposed to pooing everywhere....they also fly all over the shop on the top floors of some blocks which frighten the sh.it out of me sometimes as I climb up the stairs....where does the CWU stand on pigeons/poo and should we even be delivering to these blocks at all?
I will get some photographs of where I deliver tomorrow!
I also dread to think what stuff I bring into the office/home on my work shoes sometimes too....

nothing compared to rural duties, some farmyards ankle deep in cow poo but we just get on with the job.

Thanks to your post I am now scared to go out of the house and i look forward to informing my DOM that your post has set my acute fear of outside spaces off again.

Pigeon poop carries harmful bacteria that forms in the dried droppings, You can get seriously ill from any of their droppings but the most harm is in the dried form. If it is a low amount of droppings you will most likely not be affected in anyway if there is ventilation and you are heathly. If the place is saturated with old droppings you MUST wear protection. The harm is when the dust from the droppings comes in contact with mucous membranes which means eyes, nose, mouth etc. You need to wear a NIOSH approved respirator, the one that covers your nose and mouth and had the filters on the sides. Wear gloves and sealed eye protection, try not to expose your skin too much. Decon your self after words. If you contact this stuff you could become infected with menagitis that attacks your central nervous system and can cause death in a matter of 24 hours if not treated instantly. If you get treated you still may risk neurological damage, lung damage or other side effects. This is not a joke, take a very militant aproach to protecting yourself, if your empoyer is calling you lazy or a wimp cause you dont want to risk it or wont provide you the protection QUIT NOW. This is your life, this is similar to working around heavy metals or trying to avoid mercury contamination. When in doubt, leave the area until you are confident that you have good protection.]
