A Deputy Manager, is only a Manager when required, the rest of the time they remain in their usual position.
As a consequence they receive Substitution, which is an additional amount on top of their normal wages to make the figure up to the appropriate rate.
The last time I looked a 39 hour OPG deputising as 'ML4' Line Manager was getting a top-up of around £80-85. Bear in mind also that the Manager's working week is a few hours longer than 39 hours so you're effectively receiving about a couple of pony's for working your colleagues like mules!

Longer than 39 hours? so how come in our office there's only one left after 12 mon-fri and 10 on a Sat. They work less hours than the OPG's.
To me the extra money is irrelevant.
It's the part about selling your soul to the devil, screwing your colleagues over, all for what would amount to about £60 pw after tax.
Not worth it.
And losing my self respect would hurt too.
If you happen to still get the £20/week ex-PHG payment, you won't receive it for any day you substitute as a manager. The same applies to the Mail Centre supplement. Any shift allowance also disappears but you should get the equivalent CMA shift allowance.
You don't have any eligibility for the manager's bonus scheme unless you substitute for at least 13 weeks in the year. You also never progress above the manager's minimum salary band regardless of how long you substitute
