Can you refuse to be a porter ?

Hi . Does any good union rep / postie know if it is possible to refuse to do this new portering job due to a history of back problems?

I suppose if goes off the question is it a reasonable request, if you have a history of back trouble I would say it isn't a reasonable request, but does you Dom or line manager know about your previous problems with your back?

Yes. The last 3 absences have been because of back pain . Surely I have a case to decline the porter position mate .

Yes I definitely agree with you,could cause undue strain on your back and cause more injury,sure some other postie can do it, on my sector at work our line manager does our portering we haven't got any spare staff lol, good luck anyway.

I used the trolley on my previous walk , not suitable on my new walk due to steep inclines & blocks of flats .

The porters should ideally be volunteers as should the supersorters,packet sorters and the double preppers.
Since the whole point of the exercise is to where possible match people to skills and therefore get the best performance from them it makes f**k all sense to have demotivated people doing tasks they don't want to do.
How thick are these managers?

Its not the managers fault entirely. It Mr Higson whose whole approach is to MANAGE problems and has no truck with, or understanding of the position that good Leadership from all levels (top to bottom) would deal with most problems before they arose.

Even the last rung in the rank ladders of the Forces understand that you get more by leading than you do by pushing.

Same thing happening in Dundee East next week managers forcing staff to be porters, one guy is in the same position as the OP he even has an atos report stating he can't push yorks or trolleys and I believe we have the thickest managers in Royal Mail
