DOGS-defence against and preventing attack

Post by spiderj »

Anyone else find its the smaller dogs that are the worst?
So far I've been bitten once and a few near misses.
Luckily it turns out wheelie bins can stop a running dog if placed between you and it.
And shouting loudly(and politely) sometimes works.
Any other ideas out there.... :wave

1. Do not try to run away as you WONT make it.
2. Try using the pouch as a shield as a lot of dog will attack it instead of you.

If the above dont work your screwed and anything goes as the smegger is after your arse.
Rows of houses all bearing down on me........I can feel their blue hands touching me.......All these things in all positions.........All these things will one day take control..........

If you see a dog walk away quietly and don't enter.

generally yes, although i'd rather take on a 1 stone terrier than a 10 stone rockweiler (spelling ?)

It's Rottweiler. I agree bigger dogs do more damage, but also have to say it's usually the smaller ones that go for you.

A lad I know once had 2 terriers go for him, one clamped onto his arm, so before the other could join in, he picked it up and threw it. The owners response? 'What do you think you're doing to my dog?' I laughed, but it beggars belief.

Never been attacked by a big dog, only small dogs. Trick I've learnt is to shout as loud as possible at them, my automatic response to dog clamping teeth around my shoe is 'f**k off - kick kick' seems to work seems to suprise/scare the dog and off it goes, only to be replaced by the dogs owner - so repeat 'f**k off - kick kick'.

lately on my round there is a block of open flats, with a big bit of grass in the middle, its a proper maze with lots of turns etc and this one bloke has a flippin huge huge great dane, it used to just bark (its bark shakes the ground) and that didnt fuss me, but lately when it seems me it growls and comes bounding across the place going mental and trying to 'get me', the owner thinks its only 'playing' and thinks its funny but its not. its pissing me off, i genuinely nearly punched in it the face the other week. problem is i cant really refuse to deliver because its a whole block of 49 flats, the dog is NEVER on a lead and the owner is just a retard, im pretty sure its gonna bite me soon. happy days. if it does im gonna stamp on its head.

Well, you can refuse to deliver to the whole block on H&S grounds. Though it should obviously be dealt with before it got to that. Make your manager aware of the situation, and they should write to the owner and go from there.(Though if your manager is anything like one in my office, they'll do nowt 'til someone's had a chunk taken out of their arse).

You should just endorse the mail dog loose etc and bring it back tell your manager and let him sort it out.

My standard response now is to run and endorse the mail.no matter how much there is.luckily my lino agrees that personal safety is paramount.
That being said-under law you are allowed to defend yourself using reasonable force when attacked or believe you are about to be attacked .
Also when delivering packets I knock the door and present the packet to door first-any dog coming at me will be eating the packet first and not me.
In a previous dog a lady let her collie out deliberately her response to me was mad"what are you doing to my dog!"
I responded"putting my knee in its throat to make it let go of my hand"
Just a shame we aren't allowed to use bite back etc(doggy pepper spray) :no no

One thing i have learnt from doing this job is that if you shout louder than the dog barks it will back off or at least think twice about atacking you. That little snippet of info has saved me from harm on more than one occasion and stil never been bit.

I've been in a new duty to me. There is a farmhouse that is fenced off and signs saying guard dog loose. The other lads say it's harmless, but I haven't seen it yet, so I can't make my mind up till I asses the dog. Today I whistled at the gate to get the owner to come out. No one came out, so I endorsed the mail 'guard dog loose?' No post for them today!

You did the right thing,if YOU don't feel safe don't go in 'it doesn't matter what other people do,it's your health and possibly your clean record that matters.
