take the payment or the day off
Hi everyone, hope you are enjoying your bank holiday weekend, i just want to ask a quick question, i'm sure I read somewhere that if you are owed a day because your day off fell on a bank holiday you can opt for the money instead, i'm fed up going into the office all the time trying to get the day off that I am owed and being told their are no spare days available.cheers

Yes you can get paid for it but you have to ask. I got done out of easter monday because its seemingly not up to the manager to automatically sort it out for you!

Re: take the payment or the day off
It was stopped years ago. You can't opt for payment if the day off falls on a non-rota'd day, but by the same token that day off should be credited to your A/L, and if it hasn't been, then get the union involved. You shouldn't just lose your entitlement to a B/H credit because some silly DOM doesn't keep up with the rules.krussel wrote:ame here, tried last year1984 wrote:No choice in my office. Re: take the payment or the day off
I read this
Where a rest day falls on a bank holiday (i.e. 26, 27 December or 2 January, plus 3 Jan in Scotland) and it is not operationally sensible to transfer the rest day to another day in the same week people will receive an additional day holiday (including those working ‘a week off in six’ or other variations on this theme) in the form of a day in lieu or alternatively the excess hours can be taken as normal overtime
Can anyone say for sure which agreement or document the above is in please. Bit of a debate going on as managers say it can't be done an I want to prove it is our right that if they don't give us another day off in the same week this giving us the same opportunity to work our rest day as everyone else has then we can book it as overtime.

We had a fight over it at area level after the Easter BH.
They've agreed to pay it...for the moment but they are not best pleased so....

Re: take the payment or the day off
Thanks fishtank but can they argue this only applies to bank holidays over the Christmas period and not bank holidays in say may for instance. Is there anywhere that says this is for all bank holidays?

The way it's written and quoted in your post, they will. If they meant ALL bank Holidays they would have written "eg"; "ie" means "that is" so it implies Xmas and the New Year Bank Holidays only in that statement. Thanks fishtank but can they argue this only applies to bank holidays over the Christmas period and not bank holidays in say may for instance.

Re: take the payment or the day off
Why would there be a separate arrangement for Xmas Bank Holidays?
And where then is it in writing that the only option is being credited with a day in lieu?
And as FT says - his Branch has already argued the case and won.
Why would there be different arrangements for different areas regarding different Bank Holidays?

The societies of consumption and squandering of material resources are incompatible with the idea of economic growth and a clean planet.

Re: take the payment or the day off
Why would Royal Mail oppose it?
It helps managers in DO's because it reduces carry over of holidays which seriously screws with both their holiday allocation and manpower planning.
Managers can even look for volunteers to move their day off to the BH and take the money instead, that would allow offices to staff up for the rest of the BH week which is usually an overtime fest anyway because of extra D2D and the random and completely unfathomable way the mail comes through after a BH.
Part-timers would only get SSPR and the difference between SSPR and 1st10hrs overtime is negligible anyway but any gains there would be offset by pushing the docket monsters down to a lower rate quicker.
These hours have to be paid for at some point so why not now when it suits staff a bit more?
