3 Months after Employment

Post by Postietjay »

Okay, so I have now been a postie for just over 3 months.. Here is my summary of time so far.
Contract: part time 30 hours a week.

Was excited to become a postman, especially where I went to the induction. 30min paid break, Was also told I could stop at a cafe for my break.

As I got to the office for my 1st week, I noticed straight away morale was low!

First few weeks I was put on a few van share rounds, however everything I had learnt at the induction had gone out the window. Bags over 16kg, carrying 2 bags on shoulders, not stopping for a break and going over my time.

As I was told no one claimed overtime? Why? Because The manager is an aggressive bully and people dont want an arguement just for 30mins. Crazy stuff!

After 6 weeks, I was told that I would now have a permenant walk round with a htc. This round was one of the worst in the office, other employees had refused but as on probation period I couldnt say no. First week I was going over my time by an hour or 2 but never claimed as I would just be told I was "too Slow"
Being part time, a full timer preps my frame. All I do is turn my packets, re-directs, tie up and go! However this sometimes is not the case. Takes me around 45-50mins however my manager thinks it should take 30mins! Which all my colleagues think he is crazy for setting that for me.

So Im out just before 10, its a 15-20min walk before I even deliver anything. On a quiet day I get back around 14:30-15:00 with No break. This round is a menace for packets, so on a busy day Its around 15:30.

So 6-6.5 hour days with no break, however Ive been told that My contract will change to 6.5 hours a day to come in and also prep my frame but its 9 day fortnights. Id like to stay part time due to having a young family also Id be doing around 7-7.5 hours per day.

My contract has also ran out last week although Im on the current rota Ive had no written confirmation that Ive been taken on permenantly, which is worrying.

I feel I cannot speak to the manager and the floor
Manager I feel is overshadowed by the manager.

At the time I was employed, our office took on 3 staff and now there is
Only myself left. The 2 others have left. I have felt like quitting at stages as not getting paid overtime.

Well thats about it for now, Please feel free to comment and any suggestions welcome

Jay

If you haven't done so, join the union, and ask for help/advice from work mates or the rep.

Don't give the company anything, time, goodwill because they will take it from you with a smile and then still want your soul.

I hope your lot improves with time Postietjay.

are you in the union? if not join it. if you feel bullied or harrassed then report it. as for your contract its difficult cos the fixed term ones they can change on renewel which is a bugger. if they wont pay overtime then dont do it. chances are you are not slow infact i can guarantee you are not slow! its just bully tactics a quick email to Moya Greene will sort that out mate. justsayit@royalmail.com your manager will hate you but its better than being bullied mate. good luck. dont give in to them either!

You need to speak to your line manager before leaving the depot and get his authority if you are prepared to do overtime. If you can, do it in front of a colleague so that you have proof. If he is not prepared to authorise overtime, do not do it under any circumstances, and get his instructions on what he wishes you to do with the excess mail that you will not be able to deliver. Do not under any circumstances offer him options, it is his job to manage overunning deliveries. If you have any reaction from him regarding intimating that you are slow, ask him how he has come to that decision without having tested you, and that he should follow the Royal Mail and CWU Joint Statement of Fairness, Dignity and Respect in Delivery. This statement should be posted on the union board at work and you may find a colleague who carries a small card highlighting this joint statement. You should not have any problems if you follow this. It also confirms that if any individual AGREES to work beyond their scheduled finish time, they WILL receive the appropriate level of remuneration.
The ammunition is there to be treated fairly, do not be scared to use it.

Its not getting any better sunshine. This is it. This is the true reality of being a postal worker..Its s**t!!!
On another note grow some balls and stand up for yourself, dont expect the union to help becuse they wont.
So tell your manager your not working over your hours and your booking your break on the end of your duty!!
You gotta be somebody but its hard its really hard, sometimes i feel like going down.

First few months! I still feel like this! Feel like quiting most weeks, but then think about how I'll pay my bills and the job market isn't so good these days.
I would like to say it gets better but 3months in and your still not getting back till 3.30pm that walk must be a bitch!
It is tough in your first few months cuz you want that contract renewed, but don't let manages walk over you, as soon as they sense weakness they'll never give up.
If your part-time just roll in at 8 and punch out at 2, or what ever your contracted for? and see how they like that, managers hate having to do left over bits of walks, which is the main cause of bulling from managers i feel, they'll soon pay you all the over-time you need.

sounds like a no win situation. Just cut off simple as that they can't fire you for cutting off if they do they are opening themselves up for serious legal battles which they will lose and the manager will lose his job. It simple bully boy tactics used by all managers just dont be the one to take the bait.

They can conduct code you for Wilful Delay if you don't follow the correct cut off procedure. So get to know the correct procedure, and play their rules against them

I feel for you mate, I'm so glad I eventually got another job and got out of there!

The whole company is run on bullying and misinformation, I got the feeling management resorted to this to achieve the unrealistic goals they were set from the top. Problem with this is then the big bosses think this is fine and start setting more and more ridiculous expectations while the managers on the shop floor bully, lie and cheat to acheive these and get their bonuses!

The ones that lose out big time are the posties, I hated it and it's probably got worse since I left 10 months ago!

Sucks. I think everyone in my office feels like they are gettign screwed over. I would advise you to know your rights. See out your probation period, how long is this anymroe know? Then you have the same rights as a perm employee. Can only get rid of you IF they don't need you ans this has to be proven. But join the union, you will get some support.

ask someone about the union and who your rep is- sow the seed... join the union!
you are temp- so you feel like you can be thrown away... you can't. Especially if you are in the union. What they are doing is wrong... and i would tell them you need to finish at the correct time, as you need to get your kids from school... if its written down that your finishing time is 3pm... then that is your finishing time. its their repsonsibilty to mange their workers to complete on time... and even if you are too slow... they should account for that and offer you assistance... not all offices are like this... you need to tell them before you leave...
and tell them now! you have children and only want part time hours... they're obivously understaffed and thinking they can load on you because they've lost their other new starters.
