Hi all, our hours are changing to 7.00 starts which means on wed and thu we are paid till 3.00. Currently I just take 40 mins off finish time and work till that time which on a wed I work till 2.20. If they make you take your break before you go out, then how are you supposed to pick kids up from school?

No they can't force you to work your break. However, they cannot schedule your break at the end of your working day that is illegal.

The Law of the land is that if you work, or are expected to work 6 hours or more, then you are entitled to a Statutory break. The break must be a minimum of 20 minutes, and can be paid or unpaid, but must be somewhere in the middle of the working day. They can also stipulate when you take your statutory break, but not where.

You may want to take your full break at the end of your shift however, Royal Mail cannot officially, or legally, allow you to do that. The way forward agreement (IIRC) allows breaks to be split 20/20 and some units allow people to take the 2nd 20 minutes at the end of the shift as the feeling is that its outside the statutory limits so the rules do not apply.

Is you office in van share?? When our was going into van share I was on the committee to help sort the walks out and we were told you HAVE to take your 20 minutes break before starting your delivery...no matter what. .

The simple answer is yes they should make sure that you have taken a break before going out on delivery, the reason is because of fatigue issues and accident prevention. Although I understand that they are now looking at two 20min breaks as per the wayforward agreement.

Surely the issue is that your walk shouldn't go beyond 14.30 as stated within the B&T agreement below:

The new workplan standardises service delivery times Monday to Saturday. Letter delivery completion times will be up to 1500 hours for residential areas and up to 1600 hours for rural. The vast majority of letter deliveries are planned to be completed by 1430 hours and most by 1400 hours. So would be interested to know what percentage of your walks meet the above and if they don't then the local rep/area/divisional reps shouldn't have signed them off.

In my area when we agree the spans for the unit we then work backwards from 14.00 so for example a 4hr span would mean 10.00 first letter.

Cheers on a flyer thats all I needed to know. Too much time indoors and not enough time outdoors. We bring back loops or book over most days. If we are out on delivery by around 9.30 we have a chance of getting round on time (when we started at 6.30) but tomorrow we start at 7.00 I am full time and dont go on ips and I have to throw out 3 walks with upto 6 lots of dtd to do too. Just seems like they want to keep you in office longer and longer. Years ago they couldnt wait to get you out. How to make such a simple job more complicated

You're not allowed to take a break at the end of your duty, it's not allowed and I think it's also illegal. It has to be taken at some point during the middle. What about 20 mins before you go out and if there is a nice/suitable place approx half way along your walk 20 mins there?

That's not what we've been told by the CWU reps. 20 minutes has to be taken before we go out for H&S/ fatigue reasons, but the other 20 minutes can be taken when you want. Some take it in the van on the walk, most take it at the end.
