trolleys

just a few questions on the use of trolleys on delivery, do they slow you down?, are they helping with fatique, how long are the delivery spans using them? do you need to leave work in or cut off because you use them?

They are on average 10/15 mins slower per loop, but you can obviously fit more packets in as you have 2 bags , as far as fatigue might help a bit but I only use them when the loop is 2 big for 1 bag. If you were to use trolleys all the way round no way could I complete as the round would take over an hour longer, they are only usefully when you have a loop with Lots of packets and your partners loop is smaller so they can do the big packets.

Trolley use is MANDATORY after revisions, not your problem if you can't complete!

Yeah right hardly anyone uses trolleys at our place and managers turn blind eye because the whole office would be cutting off.

Only used the lightweight ones so far and yes they do slow you down a bit but in my experience not by more than a few minutes per loop.
are they helping with fatique
There's more walking because you can't cut across driveways as much, but there's no more heavy bags on your shoulder.

I generally finish no more than 10-15 minutes either side of my finishing time.

You never were allowed to do that, you need to understand what legal access rights we have.

If you'd always done the job properly, instead of cutting accross between houses etc. then the revision spans wouldn't have come out as unachievable as they did.
Years of postmen taking shortcuts has been the main cause of new methods failure, so what do you do to make it better?
...continue to cut corners so that next time savings are required they are even more unachievable than they are now. Stop digging your own graves, do it properly today!

I love the trollies. Some duties I occasionally cover used to either have heavy bags or a lot of dead walking on busy days. Now, with the trolley, they're so much easier, though they probably add 20-25 minutes to the delivery span. I definitely feel less tired, and if I haven't covered a walking duty for a while my feet definitely don't ache as much.

Only with good reason should we not be using LWTs on P&L partnership walks and HCTs (despite what most do in my depot) should be pushed around the whole duty, only left for two minutes before getting them back in sight (unless emptied of ALL mail)... Get caught be IB and you are out the door!

The people covering my walks who are reacting badly to performance issue pressure by doing looped by pouch and leaving HCTs locked up with mail are saving the DOM ~45-90mins per day of outdoor time.

Mail is down apparently on the computer, so why is doing the job vaguely close to properly still taking a fair chunk of o/t to complete? Could it be the "Mystic Meg" predictor now relies on OPGs doing things that save a lot of time and risk a P45 everyday? :hmmmm

Yes they slow you down, and if managers tell you otherwise they are lying. However you do feel less tired, no weight ever on your shoulder. I found that on new estates trollies are great. However down back lanes and moving around cars they are a pain in the :shhhhh . I prefer to pull mine, and they are lightweight. Hoever i have hand many bag handles snap whilst pushing the trolly. Trollies are a grey area i see. If its a heavy day the mangers dont like hand backs and are all or you carrying bags, but when you say it takes too long with trolly they say dont use them.... trollies is a pain in the :shhhhh as ive said.

I'm a bit of a fan of light weight trollies and they don't slow you down that much. They do, however, make everything easier and have done wonders for my aching back .

I fully appreciate they should be used following revision. However in our office nobody uses them apart from two of us. My partner uses one as he has a dodgy knee and I use one when we have a heavy day. Some have flatly refused and said they will NEVER use one. The manager has never mentioned to anybody apart from us about using one.

Pros:
You can carry a lot more.
You definitely walk faster and for longer on the duty.
You don't get hampered going down narrow paths.
Better for using stairs in flats.
Easier to use PDA and dockets.
Do not feel so tired at the end of a duty.
Reduces potential long term health problems.

Cons:
Setting up trolley and bags between loops.
You walk further, due to going to and from the trolley.
Security, unless you take it down every path, into every block of flats, up every staircase, to every single letterbox with you.
You are unlikely to finish on time! :Very Happy

This is, I'm sure not the definitive list but what springs to mind immediately.

In summary, I think they are great when it's a heavy day and a total waste of time on light days such as Tuesdays.
If you do a job too well, you’ll get stuck with it.

Trollies..

Should be used, quite often are not.

Mail volumes are down, classic line, but, bags are not as heavy as they once were - no Sky mags, less holiday brochures, less catalogues, definitely not as many letters. More parcels, but they (generally) weigh less.

They do take some weight off the shoulder, but with a little thought and (warning, Royal Mail word coming up) flexibility in your use of the van, loop tweaking etc it is possible for trollies to be dismissed.

There is of course exclusions, those loops that have unsuitable terrain, flats and whatever excuse you can come up with. Managers are of course pro-trolley-at-all-costs and come out with all manner of pathetic reasoning for a trolley being acceptable in a given location. I've yet to be beaten on that score as, for every argument they supply, I have one to counter it..

And yes, they slow you down enough to ruin the ridiculous times set by Pegasus/Georoute or whatever they call it - leave in or book..

the dom in our office has said people using trolleys that are going over are going to get in to hot water with him as he doesn't want to pay overtime.
