Me and one of my work colleagues were just wondering something about overtime/start times, I'm on a 33 hour contract and he's on a 25 hour, If say our contract hours as told by our manager start at 8, but our manager asks us to come in at 7, should that first hour be paid in overtime? Or are you supposed to just start your hours from whenever your manager tells you to come in?

If you are contracted to start at 8 and he asks you to come in at 7 - that is one hour overtime.

Yes its overtime pure and simple and should be paid as such. But only when instructed/asked by a manager - turning up early on your own initiative does not garner over time payment.

We do not currently operate on Flexi Time, however, it does mean that when they insist on working all paid hours then you will have to work to you official contract time.

Is this the problem?
You are contracted to work 8 - 2 for example.
He asks you to come in at 7 ......and then you finish at 1pm.
He then says he doesn't want to pay the overtime?

If he doesn't want to pay it, don't do it.
If he is asking you in an hour early, he must have a reason for doing so.
So either he wants to pay for it, or it doesn't get done.
He can't have his cake and eat it.

Not on an ad hoc basis.
If he wants to permanently change your start time every day or some days then that needs to be discussed.
But he can't change your start time from day to day or week to week according to his whim.

There seems to be an influx of young part timers who don't know their rights - or worse, don't seem to care. There's one on our section who isn't due to start until 8.10 in the morning, but he keeps coming in and starting at 6.30, working 1h 40 mins unpaid. It's been pointed out to him that he doesn't need to do it, but it doesn't stop him
