Can RM stop my pay?

I rang in sick this morning and when my manager rang me back said I would not get paid for today because I'd gone sick on the eve of the strike, so would not get paid for today (or any of the strike days etc).

Can RM do this?

I had been feeling ill on Wednesday, but thought it would be bad to go home half way through my shift, so stuck it out.
But I didn't feel better today so thought it better to stay at home to get well, than have an "accident" at work (it's the trots!).

I didn't think they would be able to stop my pay for today, it's not my fault it just so happens to fall on the eve of the national strike.

Any idea's what I can do about it?

Hi rob - If you phoned Royal Mail up before the start of the strike (i.e. before 12:00 pm today) then Royal Mail can not stop your pay. Best thing to do is to contact your union rep. Tell them what the manager told you. Also keep a note of what the manager told you, who the manager was etc.. You might have a case of harrasment.

We were told in work time learning on tuesday that if we went sick before the strike without a very good reason (eg in hospital) that we would not be paid and put down for ssp (statutory sick pay)

It's in your contract of employment!

Its worth contacting your union rep / branch to see where you stand with this. I saw the guidance given to manager on sickness during the last set of strikes and if you called in beforehand then they where told they had to pay you sickpay. You can self cert for 5 days - if royal mail will not take a self cert then surely they are discriminating against you.

butch - no they shouldn't (assuming your not on your 1 yr probationary period.). Once again if you have any problems contact your rep / branch.

Thanks for the replies - I did ring in at 03:50am and will ring in again in the morning as I'm still not feeling 100%.

It does seem like my manager has it in for me cos I'm one of those who have been doing the job properly since June and he doesn't like it.

I went sick this morning with a sprained wrist from mountain biking last night, I left message on answer phone last night, he phoned me back dinner time today to see how i was and to say be careful with my wrist as it will be week now. He asked when will i be back I said i will ring on Monday to let them know but more likely be Wednesday. nothing was said about pay or anything just take care

from what I can gather they were told that if anyone went sick day before strike they would have to have Docs cert told them they are playing with fire as Doc should not be made to waste time on their petty tantrums. Don't know what dom is doing about the 1 that rung in today!!!
