Picking duties advertised

Hi WW3 is going off in my office just want some pointers , it has nothing to do with me.

A duty came up as someone left, this duty was advertised and postie 1 with seniority got it.

His duty walk was then advertised for 2 weeks and the most senior Postie ( 2) got this .

this is where it starts, Postie duty was advertised and a few folks put there names up and some crossed them out and some folks never put there names up. now postie 2 went over to the new walk for a week, but at the end of the week decided he did not like it , as his old duty was advertised he signed back into it being the senior postie.

Now his duty walk he just left has been given to a postperson who.s name was on the original list, but other posties say that this duty ahould be readvertised .

Who is right ?

I thought that you had to stay on the walk for the twelve months before you could swap again!

As Biker Mouse has pointed out once you sign for an advertised duty you can't move for 12 months

Is there not a procedure that if you did not like it within a week that you could change back ?

Simple fact here, seniority should be scrapped, all the useless posties end up getting the duties, staff that are good, effiecient should be interviewed for duties along with seniors. This process is aload of garbage. I for one wish that when this company gets privitised that seniority is scrapped. We will then all be interviewed for jobs and he best candidate will get it. Its the best way to move the company forward. If no1 likes this way of working then get on with it or get other jobs

Thats not a FACT - its an OPINION.

However, entering into a debate - the best candidate - how would you decide who is the best candidate and if there is more than one duty available how would you decide which duty the ideal candidate would go on. Genuine question.

I mean would you give a high profile duty - like a one that has the local MP on it to someone who can't spell correctly, or whose Grammar is poor - wouldn't that be pointless as both spelling and grammar are not a pre-requite for doing the job well.

What skills would the ideal candidate have and use that others wouldn't be expected to have.

If speed or "no hand-backs" is a pre-requiste wouldn't it be more efficient, productive and cost effective to put those posties onto the monster duties.

As I say genuine questions.

What difference would it make to you? How do you expect to be the best candidate, when you can't even post on here using correct spelling and grammar?
How do you define a useless postie? Who is a good, efficient staff member?
If we don't like to work the way you suggest, why the hell would we just get on with it? Surely, the best option would be to complain until we got what we wanted.
If you think privatisation and changing how duties are allocated will solve all problems and issues in RM, then you have no clue at all, and should leave these types of issues to those who are knowledgeable.
You have a chip on your shoulder about seniority. What happened? Did you lose out on a duty to a senior postie? Why not follow your own advice? Stop coming on here crying about seniority, and just get on with it, or go find another job if you don't like it.

...and even if you got your wish and seniority was scrapped you'd probably still end up on the bottom of the pile!

Is there anyway of getting out of a walk you've signed for then? Are you really stuck with it for 12 months! How did the guy in the original post manage to get out of it?

I suppose the manager might allow you to become a Reserve but then put you on the same walk that you did not like - it will be ironic but very possible; reserves do any walk in my office...

There are a number of reasons why my duty is not working out for me, main one being i hate it! Don't think i could do another week on it. Even if i do stick it out for x amount of months who knows how long it'll be till another duty becomes available and even if I'll get it?

You are supposed to stay on any duty you pick for 12 months. It's to prevent people repeatedly swapping, costing money for training(if you're allowed it ), and to ensure staffing/resourcing doesn't become problematic.
