Transfer question ... Yet again

Post by Rudolph_Hucker »

An office I know have offered me a position.

I would love to take it as it is nearer to home and I know the area extremely well.

I have been with RM since the beginning of this year, on a permanent contract.

I have spoken to my union rep who says I need to be at my 'home' office for 6 months before I can transfer. My manager says it needs to be 12 months.

Does anybody know the definitive answer please and if possible with a link to the answer.

Thanks.

Go to Dom in local office you want to work, and ask her/him about the situtation in the office, and explain you work at X and would like to work in this office. Then they might be able to organise a transfer for you. But I don't know how long you have to work at your office. But a guy had an early transfer in my office. If there is a will and way it can be done.

Thanks Darren, I have already put the process in motion.

I worked in the office I want to transfer to on Friday, that's when the manager said there is a job there if I can get a transfer.

Saturday, I went to my DOM and asked if he would/could release me. It's then when he said I had to work at my home office for a minimum of 12 months. However, the Union rep said it was 6 months, which is not that far away. Of course I want to transfer ASAP because the job might not be available in a couple of months.

My DOM did say he'd have a chat with my target office manager to try and sort something out. Hopefully they can sort out a solution.

What I need to establish is the minimum term I need to be at my home office before I can transfer.

There is a lot a more work available at my target office, whereas I'm on a three day week at my home office, 24 hours contract.

Another example of our kind, caring employer... when it suits them they will send you to another office at a moments notice and put it down to 'operational needs' yet when we want a transfer they put up as many obstacles, b********t and red tape as possible, no doubt either just due to sheer petty minded awkwardness or because they can't be arsed dealing with the paperwork involved.

What type of contract were you on when you transfered Spen?

I'm on a permanent. I was told once the earliest you can transfer is dependent on your contract. Somebody on a 3 month can only transfer after 3 months, on a 4 month can transfer after 4 months etc.

That is what confuses me, having a contract with defined term. :Very Happy

YAY! Thanks Spen, that is the info I was after, not what I wanted but nevertheless it's a start. Maybe I could be loaned, I know that happens between offices.

One chap started a couple of weeks after me at our office but I've never set eyes on him! He was immediately loaned out to another office.

That is exactly what is happening to me. I'm only getting three days a week at my office and have been for the last month, apart from last week when I got four. I asked my DOM how long is this likely to continue for and he just shrugged. I'd heard they are under pressure from 'up the food chain' to cut hours and lapse so his reaction pretty much said it all.

So my DOM suggested I try other offices which I did. So what I do now is, when the rota goes up I let the other office know my free days and they give me what they can.

UPDATE:

I've had a chat with the DOM at the office I want to transfer to. He is offering me a 32 hour contract instead of the 24 hour one I'm on. With the extra hours offered and considerably less traveling I would be about £75 a week better off.

My question is this, can my existing DOM stop a transfer short or long term? What reason/s can he have for not releasing me? If he does play hard ball, can I get the Union involved? I naturally don't want it to get to that stage but I need to know my options.

Your manager can delay the transfer for a maximum 28 days due to 'Operational Necessity', which will be things like being short staffed etc., but after that you should go immediately. This is obviously after the transfer has been granted/approved so you need to start that off ASAP if you haven't already. The DOM can delay it initially by taking an age to process the transfer, but once the DOM at the new office is involved they will be pushing to get it through ASAP as they will want/need you yesterday. Ask the Rep how long the procedure should take, and if it looks like dragging on, you may have to start proceedings like a grievance, which I wouldn't worry too much about as it would be against your soon to be former DOM, and not the one that you are going to work for. You could play the 'delaying me is costing me money card too', and if the current DOM blocks it for any time/reason, ask that you are paid your new level of hours from the transfer date, probably won't happen, but you can ask.
Sometimes, I wish I wasn't a Rep.
