Segregated mail.

Has this come to your DO yet ? Basically it is where when you finished collections , you empty the meter pouches and sort the letters into mail trays , 1st class small, large, 2nd class etc. Put the trays into there yorks and send to MC.So all they have to do at the MC is tip straight into system. Less work for them.

It started it's life as the Customer Traying project where small to medium sized business customers were asked to face their mail into perstorp trays. They were given a guide on how top do this (upside down for letters/C5 all facing the same way, address up for large letters, separate trays for letters/large letters PPI/Meter stamped to be separate). Needless to say as there was no real incentive for the customers aside from the dubious ones of mail hygiene and the fact that trays get fast tracked through the pipeline, Yeah Right !!, it was not much of a winner with rubbish segregation and facing.

I think next came the Seg Bag project ... similar type of thing but this time the delivery OPG carried a special pouch into the customers premises and loaded/segregated/faced it there. Back at the MC or hub the work was then 'decanted' (their word not mine!!), into Perstorp Trays.

Now containerising mail at the hub isn't new and if you have platform staff, or arriving drivers, who are not fully occupied it does present an opportunity to utilise them better. Also if the mail can bypass the meter tables in the MC then in effect you are advancing the arrival time to the iLSMs and giving yourself a more even arrival pattern that is easier to staff and clear.

My main problem with all of these initiatives is the lack of proper planning involved. In most cases it is assumed that the OPGs have the spare time, no study is undertaken to prove that they have. And in terms of workload it's a complete joke ... there are PVs for containerising mail and ACFs for the trays, but do they use them to generate workload, no, and that is where the wheels fall off.

We've had this in our office for about 3 years. It works quite well now, although it was a pain in the arse to start with. Mainly because we have 6 other DOs who bring their collections to us and their presentation was crap and they would just dump it and drive off. After A bit of arse kicking for them and some of the POs and firms and everything runs smoothly.

The collection hub in my office have been doing it for about 4 years.
The reason being, or at least the given at the start, was it was to take up the slack from the MC closures.
Seems to work, gives staff duty content to preserve FT jobs.
