Why are there so many managers?

Post by thegreatestfreddy »

Over the last 6 months there has been a clear doubling of the number of managers working at our DO (not looking to be doing a lot either)....
why is this when day in day out we are told mail volumes are falling and there are fewer delivery staff as walks have got larger under successive revisions... surely their numbers should be reducing accordingly....

It's like 'Ken Dodd and his Diddymen' now at our place :dance :chuckle

It's happening all over - Royal Mail is awash with overpaid non-productive managers, costing the company an absolute fortune.
Who would want shares in a company so profligate with waste? The potential share buying public (if it happens) need to know...

As to your question of why, no idea. Failed postmen keeping the system going in the event of a dispute?

Don't worry, when we get privatised the new owners will cull them in droves.

Along with a good smattering of posties. :roll:

Yes there are far too many of the f***ers,I think they breed them in some type of tank next to Matalans's then they can equip them in them pin striped shirts.
We have had two new editions in recent weeks under the guise of World Class Mail preperation,one was an ex DOM but he couldn't hack it, as his office was always overspent and the other guy we had as a lino once and was as thick as they come,they spent most of the time walking around looking gormless pointing to sorting frames and holding tape measures(for 10 mins) and then both disappeared into the union room :no no to read the paper!

I honestly think some smaller sorting offices don't need a DOM. They could quite easily have one "managing" say three smaller offices like a area manager does in other business areas. Lets face it many haven't got a clue and I think they should 100% be more hands on and sort and do some delivery on a daily basis.When Royal Mail is privatised during the next parliament [anytime between 2015 - 2019] and we are all on £6.50 an hour this will probably be the case.

I believe that a few managers have been moved over to support delivery planning and that, combined with WCM, may account for an increase in the number of 'managers'.

It does pose the question 'were their original jobs really needed?' if they can be vacated in this manner to support deliveries and once the planning is over (I know '.... ? piece of string') I doubt they will go back to them.

The term manager is still widely misused in RM, and seems to cover just about everyone represented by Unite/CMA.
DOM = Manager
Lino = Supervisor (or Chargehand)
Planner = Planner
ONLY ONE OUT OF THE THREE IS A MANAGER

I don't know? In part, self-protection? In most organizations, the more staff you manage, the less easy it is for "them" to get rid of you?

I can't find it now but I remember one post on here a few years back describing Royal Mail HQ as being full of conference rooms filled up with "working groups" of managers working on this project or the other.

The bottom would fall out of one commodities market in particular if they didn't exist in such an omnipresent, bloated & slothful manner; have you thought about those that rely upon the coffee supply chain?? :cuppa

I'm just curious but what numbers of managers to postmen are we talking about here?

I've only ever worked in a small D.O. (about 24 walks) and we've never had more than one manager (Although still one too many if you ask me!)

Rathbone Place used to be full of them ... ordering sandwiches and beverages to sustain them through the day ... mostly gone now as there is only budget for the very top and WCM of course. Project Teams used to dream up new ideas to keep them busy and employed ... most schemes never made it as far as implementation but it was a good addition to the Graduates' CVs and made some of them look to the outside world like they were actually adding some value.

Ours is a large DO... over 100 walks and the ratio of managers to postmen (just on the delivery side) is about 1 to 10

Just don't understand, like i say we are told every day that mail volumes are falling (year on year)... they do not take into account call rates which even with the reduction in mail can still be as high and we don't get out any earlier because they 'under resource' the IPS in an attempt to save further money (and of course they lapse duties at every opportunity)... they admit there is growth in parcels but do not have a realistic/fair measure of how long it can take to deliver a single parcel hence putting more time pressure on delivery postie.

1 to 10 !!!!! You've got to be kidding.

There is a ratio that RM uses for managing in MCs which I think used to be around 1 in 30 though this may have changed in units where they have team leaders.

I worked in manufacturing prior to joining RM and in the last factory that I was employed there was only one manager ... curiously called the 'Factory Manager'. There were other admin and technical staff but he was the only manager. Between him and the hourly paid production workers there were Supervisors (white coats/salaried/clean hands) and Chargehands (blue coats/hourly paid/dirty hands) ... the unit had about 400 workers.
