Any chance of someone appearing from nowhere to give us a proper election or will it just be another rubber stamping session?

When was the last proper contested election for a major National Officer role that wasn't down to someone "moving on"?

A proper challenge is good for everyone,keeps people on their toes but it doesn't happen much anymore in this union.
Too much fear of being on the losing side,too much fear of losing what you have,It's bad for democracy in my honest opinion.

Dave beat Keggie in 2003 for the DGS(P) job,now that was a real election,personal slanging matches,different factions...the lot..
He had Bob Gibson's job before that and before that he was a Divisional Rep.
Alan Johnson was GS until 1997 I think then Derek Hodgson then Billy in 2001.

I just googled him myself. good luck to him, professional union official. an asset to unison I should imagine.

Opening up the right to nominate candidates to all members that a role will represent would be more democratic. I can understand the worry that management might enter one of their supporters and campaign for them but we should trust the members to tell the difference. A Grand National size field with some colourful characters would probably get more voters to turn out.

Well why worry, it's a foregone conclusion. The present incumbent has the platform and a raft of sycophants massaging his ego. It's a pity that there isn't one member of the national team with the balls to say "step aside and lets have a fresh approach". Women within the union who whinge about the "glass ceiling" should come forward and test the theory. Personally I'd probably vote for Clyde if it was an open election, lets face it Ronald Reagan did OK as POTUS.
