Can't Complete? Dare you Tell Your Manager?
Are there Posties out there who fear telling their manager that they are unable to complete without booking overtime?

3 DELIVERY
3.1 PRIOR TO COMMENCEMENT
a) Where an employee feels that on completion of preparation he/she may experience difficulty in completing his/her delivery within the authorised time allotted, he/she should approach
his/her manager as soon as possible before setting out on delivery. It will be for the manager to discuss any problem and advise the employee what particular action should be taken.
b) When an individual has requested assistance on delivery, but the manager feels that assistance is not required, this decision along with the advice given to the employee will be recorded and associated with the daily traffic volume records. The employee can have access to this record and may ask to see it prior to commencement of his/her delivery. In addition to recording the employee's request, the employee will be instructed to ring his/her local manager prior to a specified time or as soon as possible if full completion of delivery workload within the time allotted proves not to be possible.

Excellent wordage and sounds official, but does that make it any easier when a manager is going to be stressy despite whats been officially written?

It's really up to you whether to want to work OT or you want to cut off, I can do both, I don't care what the managers think, I know (roughly) how long I'm going to be out and will leave enough, if they want to argue then it's going to take me longer to 'discuss' the issue which means I just leave more...........the management know this now and don't question me.Kafinater wrote:Excellent wordage and sounds official, but does that make it any easier when a manager is going to be stressy despite whats been officially written?
Stick to your guns, they like to bully because it's easier but if you don't want to then don't.
And use the union to reenforce your point of view

Our new DOM quite literally has almost the entire office running scared. Park & loop pairs who were (quite rightly) struggling to get done are now coming in early and working through their breaks..but not to make time at the end, they are coming in early and working through their breaks so that they can just about complete without cutting off.

if a company is stupid enough to employ you a hour and a quarter later and except you to finish a hour earlier with a 30 min break then its there own fault, you cant take that much time out of the job simply doesn't work, some of the indoor element needs taking off part timers and longer out on delivery its not rocket science.

In the voice magazine we got this week ,thre was a handy card explaining that overtime is not compulsory and they cannot force you to go past you're time. I have put this in my wallet ,and any problems I have with bosses regarding finishing at my time , will end up with me flashing the card at them. Sorted .

excellent idea from the Voice , lets all flash these cards to the bosses and they will soon get the message.

Whilst not knocking these cards one does wonder where the f**k the representation has gone in some offices...borders wrote:excellent idea from the Voice , lets all flash these cards to the bosses and they will soon get the message.
This whole B&H survey and resultant campaign should be ringing alarm bells on our side as much as management's.
Members should not have to complain directly to HQ about bullying.if they do something has gone wrong in our representation structure.
good times, bad times you know I've had my share

Spot on FT - Experienced OPGs as well as newcomers PT and FT need to have local support and regular Comms so they are up to speed with their Terms and Conditions and their rights.fishtank wrote:Whilst not knocking these cards one does wonder where the f**k the representation has gone in some offices...borders wrote:excellent idea from the Voice , lets all flash these cards to the bosses and they will soon get the message.

There are serious implications in terms of employee welfare and health/safety when staff do not take their breaks (RA or Meal Relief) so they should not be under any pressure to work through them in order to complete. Likewise coming in early or working late without payment should be discouraged as a regular occurrence as it costs jobs and remember OPGs are hourly paid not salaried.
In terms of work rate, again because there is no incentive scheme in place based on output, 75Bs should be the target for all units and functions. If targets are not consistent then either RM have their base data wrong (PVs/Traffic/Hrs) or they are applying different standards to different sections of the workforce which is discriminatory (in fact the only section that should have a slightly lower target is female OPGs by virtue of the additional 1% they get for Personal Needs in the RA%). If a good performing Mail Centre hits 70Bs then why expect 100Bs (43% MORE !!!!) from delivery units ???
If staff are not aware of what is required then CWU need to get local reps to get the message out now.

There is a boss in our area who flashes imaginary cards at staff when they misbehave.bringon4dayweeks wrote:flash a red card send off your managerborders wrote:excellent idea from the Voice , lets all flash these cards to the bosses and they will soon get the message.
As you can imagine, there are quite a lot of hand gestures aimed at him behind his back.

No, I'm far from new, I'm way WAY past new. I asked the question because I don't like having to tell managers I can't get done in time, you have to go through the same old questions giving the same old answers, I find at times its confrontational. Why can't you finish? Well I want you to clear. Joe Bloggs managed it on your day off why can't you. So if I feel like this at 30 plus years service, what about our new entrants?
