Postie loses a special delivery.

A friend of mine has lost a special delivery. His head is melted with this..... Problem is a while ago he was given a 2year serious warning on a trumped up charge that are becoming more and more frequent in our office..... Will he be sacked??

If on a 'two year serious' conduct charge, )meaning allowed no more chances in the next two years, than by its very definition a chance will not be given again!

Accidents do happen. It's totally up to the DOM but the postie should go in with union representation to discuss the issue and explain it was a genuine mistake. Genuine mistakes are not supposed to be conduct coded.

"I know I've signed for full responsibility for this Special Delivery, and should keep it with me or in the accepted secure location at all times but, I genuinely didn't" doesn't wash with me!

go back to the house say your sorry and pay them off otherwise your job is down the pan if the DOM wants to make cuts and they do want to make cuts these days. We've lost 3 staff recently and NONE of them have been replaced, 2 sacked one left.... this just proves they don't want to take on extra bods

2 year serious written warnings are different to 2 year suspended dismissal. If your friend is on a suspended dismissal, it is more likely he will be sacked. If on a 2 year serious, it should really need to be for the same reason as now i.e. he lost a special before and that's why he's on the warning.

Whether or not it's deliberate, and I believe he has just lost it by accident, it is a serious charge, failing to protect mail integrity (I think), and it can be a dismissal offence in itself. I've known people who have lost them, and some who have had them stolen, some have kept their jobs, others not. It really does depend on the manager in question as to which way it will go. It may be that it turns up, and if so, it is unlikely that he will be sacked. If it's never found, then no one can give a definite answer.

I take it it's been reported to the manager? Was he suspended?

Fess up or keep quiet, either way he's screwed, if it was something valuable it won't be long before the customer or sender contacts the office.

Hoping that the Special is found - at least that will mitigate against the possible consequence.

Its up to the DOM how much he wants to pursue this. Yes, a genuine mistake can be made, especially with Special Delivery letters... The problem is what you do with a letter that has not been signed for: You might put is back in the bag; the side pockets or main bag or you can put it at the back of your bundle...

> In the main bag, it can be lifted out of the bag depending how much mail and packet is left in the bag - has happened and then a frantic search

All in all we all make mistakes - as long as it is not very careless...

2 years suspended is serious and perhaps mean. 2 years of being owned by Management

as far as i know you cannot be dismissed if the two 2 year warnings are for different charges. might be wrong hopefully someonelse will know more than me.
