Like a lot of people in a lot of offices around the country we have staff who need to book single days off, for example, weddings, non family members funerals, your childs first ever sports day, etc, even though its our legal requirement our managers are refusing to give anybody single days off, when we asked for a reason why, we have been met with a wall of silence, we asked our rep and his reply was "they just not letting anyone have single days off", How are they allowed to get away with this and does anyone think its worth talking to the area rep.

they now owe me 15 days off and certainly will refuse me days i would like off,
but if ,and they have any surplus staff in they ask people if they would like to use their days owed .
ie at xmas when holiday are blocked off .
november when its pissing down with rain .
cwu should be right on top off this as you are not meant to carry holidays over.some in our office are owed days from 5yrs ago
what if you died would payment be given for these days NO
also you cannot request payment for them BUT if your on annual leave our mgmt will phone in the favourites on holiday
to work if they are struggling for cover .and offer them special terms

this is to stop people losing their week off or ruin their chance of week off. IT is crap as I prefer long weekend rather than whole week off. Another problem with booking week off is it need to be monday - saturday not wednesday to tuesday or whatever.

You ask if its worth talking to the area union rep? If they are anyyhing like ours you,d be better off telling some old lady at a bus stop. Terrible weak spineless union. Why I pay subs god knows!! We are being screwed at all angles and OUR union yes are union do nothing as per usual....shameful!!!!!!

i have 3 days owed from bank holidays (designated days off or hols). they wont pay you if its your day off and wont let you book it when you want it.
go a week off next month thats another bank holiday day they will owe me

Since when, my old office has allowed split weeks for ages, I mean at least 5 years or more,Wednesday to Tuesday or Thursday to Wednesday or what ever, even over two weeks.

Write a formal letter to your Dim informing him of what days you want, 2 weeks before said day inform him you will not be working that day, simples

This is one of my top 3 annoyances about working as a postman. In all my previous jobs, so long as I gave enough notice, I could have the odd day here an there for special things if I really needed it. I can't do this in this job and am consistently told to try and get a swap with someone. But obviously if it's a Saturday you want, then you haven't got much chance of getting a swap.

It's bullshit really, I really need a certain day off soon but can't get it, might just go sick - guess that's what they deserve really for thinking they can bully us into submission daily and not even give us little bits of leeway such as allowing the odd requested day-off here and there. Bunch of twats.

Leave is covered by the wayforward agreement,which is attached below, it starts on page 18 so have a read.

I normally take all my six weeks entitlement as days and have done so for a number of years as per the agreement. I guess reading the post that managers are trying to keep things simple, but your units should have an agreed leave system with the CWU.

In my unit we have 4 available slots for leave, as we have 4 reserves. The first 3 slots are for full weeks, and the last is for separate days so people can book the odd days off if they wish. There is zero reason for refusing you a single day, if there is a gap, you can have it. Personally, I'd have had the Area Rep in by now, and above if necessary, and if it still isn't sorted, I'd write up and print out a grievance form, photocopy it, and give it to all who felt the same and send them off. This would need to be done on the quiet initially, so you can't have your actions 'misinterpreted' as unofficial IA or something.

A few years back i asked for a saturday off due to the fact i was getting married on that day..i was told because i was getting married at 4pm i would have plenty of time to get ready once i'd finished my walk so was refused the day.....

yep i had a holiday booked and was still refused even after showing flight details - had to get a big union battle to be allowed off which i did eventually. sad bas*ards!!
