nepotism

Post by nipteltupe »

Hello there,

Is there any official policy on nepotism within Royal Mail?

The Mail Centre Manager's wife's son (Bilbo)has recently been employed on a part-time contract. It's 27 hours and he came in after having been appearing regularly with agency-staff. One other agency worker was employed too.

Bilbo didn't start off tipping bags like most new starters and generally does nicer jobs. He is a hard worker too.

Lately Bilbo has been seen working in the personnel office on 9 hours overtime a day before his normal part-time duty.

It turns out Bilbo is being trained to work in the personnel department. The person he is learning the job off is apparently 'not liked' by the clique in personnel.

It's maybe just a pure coincidence that Bilbo has been taken under the wing of his step-dad and ended up in personnel by accident.

But I never heard of any job opportunity being advertised. Any ideas will be very helpful. I've got nothing against Bilbo but I hate seeing this unfair treatment. There are no opportunities or perks in our office unless you're part of the clique.

seems to happen at most mail centres i am afraid, always helpful if you are a younger attractive female too! and obviously if you are a close relative of a manager then you are virtually guaranteed to get a contract...fact.

Do you know something if that happened where I work and I don't work in a mail centre, I wouldn't waste my time posting on here - I would walk up to the manager and ask him if there was a vacancy in the role that Bilbo is being trained on and if there is you would like to apply and if there isn't then you would need to speak to the rep about - NEPOTISM - it's a well known word and I'm sure he'll know precisely what you're talking about.

:hmmmm I don't suppose you know a female DOM who's looking for an ageing lothario..........whatever that is, but I'm willing to learn, as long as it doesn't involve whips and pain or at least not every day- I was hoping more in filling a niche :Very Happy

I'm pretty sure it happens up and down the country.

We have a new starter (about 6 weeks into job), on a 20 hour contract. His dad is a locker supervisor, and he has done between 20 and 40 hours O/T every week since arriving, and many others have suffered as a result. Apparently, he was the only person they 'could get hold of'.
There is also another person who get shown more favouritism than anyone I've ever seen, they get any job going to cover that has allowances, O/T ( they are PT) they book whenever they want to any level, when we ask if the duty they're currently doing will be advertised....we are told not to say anything, as we may 'find ourselves on the wrong end of a B&H complaint'.

And they wonder why we're all pissed off.
Sometimes, I wish I wasn't a Rep.

Why? It's not a controversial question and is relevant to every members right to work overtime - what's the rep doing about it?

We don't have a Rep, and the area Rep is the managers mate. It doesn't matter what anyone says, if it involves this particular person, even as in this case, totally innocently i.e. we're not having a go at them or anything, merely asking when/if a vacant duty will be advertised, and not even mentioning them at all, we are always warned if we don't stop we're for it.
Sometimes, I wish I wasn't a Rep.

Relatives cannot work in roles where effective supervision would be compromised, or would create a perception of compromise. This extends to any relationships of a personal nature. Any potential conflict situations like these must be reported to your manager or the appropriate Senior HR Manager

Ah - very good and the code of conduct is helpful too. Thanks.
If you are still unsure about the right thing to do, talk to your manager, HR Services, or report the matter using the Speak Up process by calling 0800 097 1131 or visiting http://www.intouchfeedback.com/royalmail" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;.
