Colleagues, including postmen and women from across the East geography, have attended a Town Hall meeting in Nottingham to hear about our business strategy, and get answers to their questions.

This was just one of the many employee briefings taking place across the UK throughout 2013.

Rob Jenson, operations director, East, said: ‘We all share a common goal. We want the Royal Mail to become the best delivery and mail marketing company in the UK, and we can achieve that.’

There were three things we needed to do, he said - grow our revenues, ensure our costs rose lower than our revenues, and invest in our future.

Change

Rob added: ‘Because we need to continue to modernise, we need to raise the money needed to do this, so access to external capital is another key strand.

‘I’ve been in the business for about 33 years now and so I love the Royal Mail. We have a lot of change to deliver and the best way is by working together.’

A wide-ranging question and answer session followed, with colleagues asking about jobs, part-time contracts, employee shares, the time allocated to postmen and women for parcel delivery, and access mail (DSA).

Delivery

Rob said it was crucial that we accurately identify the number of parcels being delivered and plan properly, so enough time was allocated to delivering them.

‘It’s vital that we get all that right and, if we get it right, then these routes do work and the time is there to deliver them.’

Jobs

On jobs, he said the company had a proud record of managing change. ‘In terms of people perhaps leaving the business, we have managed to date to do that on a voluntary basis and the company sees absolutely no reason why we cannot continue to do exactly that.’

He said the company was investing a huge amount in bringing delivery offices up to scratch and ensuring people had the tools for the job - access to a PDA, uniform, modern trolleys.

We’re looking to provide access to a PDA, before Christmas, for every individual, he said.

The company was also committed to a strategy that protected a large proportion of full-time jobs.

He added that we are now making money on access mail, after winning greater freedoms around what we charge for it.

The planners didn't bother with that in my office, they counted what they wanted and then averaged it out leaving us without the right number, is it any wonder that revisions fail.

that is the best statement i have heard since this agreement was falsed in. at last registered letters and tracked items will be put back on the walks and staff will have to go back to the office to bring back there pda,s once there finished there duty time. roll on xmas.

Ask for new batteries then. We had the batteries changed in all ours and they still have around 50% left at 2pm, I never charge it in the van.

Care to elaborate? I've been using PDA's for well over a year and never had a battery run out, though they used to get very low before the batteries were replaced. I can't remember the last time the low battery message has come up since they were.

Care to elaborate? I've been using PDA's for well over a year and never had a battery run out, though they used to get very low before the batteries were replaced. I can't remember the last time the low battery message has come up since they were.

I reckon our office PDA'a need a load of new batteries then. I use several different PDA's and at least half run out if left uncharged within 2 hours.

Thats strange Rob. In out office We accurately identified the number of parcels and call rates but because it was so high the planner and managers stitched us up and put in what they wanted to keep hours down then intimidated any one cutting off or booking over time!

For someone who has been in the business for 33 years he's a bit naive if he thinks you can micro-plan this job right down to individual duty level.
I might get 60 parcels tomorrow,I might get 80...I might even get 40.
This isn't factory work,the only parcels you can accurately count are yesterday's and that isn't much good to you if you're planning today or tomorrow.
It isn't even any good in a year's time using the forecasting "crystal ball" tool because parcel volume fluctuates on a daily basis.
It might help a little in identifying which duties get the most parcels but even that can be skewed by other factors like multiple drops.
I have one customer who gets 20+ parcels per day...but it's a business run from home,still when they counted the parcels it went down as 20 separate parcels.

Royal Mail's fascination with turning a simple job into a science has turned into a full blown costly obsession...will we ever see enough savings realised to justify the huge outlay in planning these revisions?

Tell Me about it Fishtank. We watched two managers spend a day in our office feel pleased with themselves because they calculated extended delivery overtime was justified for 5 hours

How large would that be Rob - 75% for example - why prevaricate, that was the agreed split so it doesn't need to be fudged - or does it.

As for the variance in parcels - there is now a manager who goes round the parcel bays and "condenses" the parcel deliveries scheduled for the second person on the P&L so that he delivers more regardless of how busy the actual delivery is and those displaced from parcels are sent out on "leavings", lapsed or whatever else is on the table. There is very little thought process put in to evaluate how reasonable the workload is more into how best to distribute the workload to the available staff.

And then give us the smallest vans possible to get them in.
