Managers hours????

In our office PH Scotland post revision, and our line and DOM all still start at their pre-revision times!!! They come in an hour before we start when no one is in, then leave at one 1pm at the latest!!! Leaving the indoor staff(sometimes one person) to hold the fort. These people are supposed to lead by example it's a disgrace no thought for safety if someone was to have an issue or god forbid an accident

I work near you and the manager's in my office claim they are allowed to manage their own hours hence the reason they go home early every day and half of them don't bother to work on a Saturday, so much for the statement "we are all in it together"

Thing that gets posties backs up is the 20 argument about how much work you can do in your hours only to come back and nobodies in charge of the place when you do get back!!! Anyway I'm off to watch half a movie before I fall asleep thanks rm you're the bestest

I think managers hours should be aligned to the staffs. If you're on delivery at 13.30 and they've gone home, how can they sort out a problem should it arise? If a postie slips/falls, is involved in a road traffic accident etc., the manager is supposed to be available to speak to you, sort out the issues that are a result of incident, i.e. cover rest of your duty. In my office, we have a few managers, and they are basically the same, but they work one day a week late to be available for just these types of incidents. Your managers almost make them seem competent by comparison.

Also in my office, nobody is allowed to be left alone on premises for security and H&S reasons. If you're on your own and have an accident, but can't get help what happens? You'll get strung up ASAP, whilst the bosses will deny the pre-existing problem, probably by conducting a work colleague who 'should have been on site'. There should always be 2 people on site at any one time, one preferably a boss, unless it's a small office with just one boss and it's their day off, in which case the postie who is the supervisor should be there, though I doubt this happens.

Do any of us expect any less of the managers? A law unto themselves. When something goes wrong, it's the blame game, to protect themselves. Raise the issue, it will probably fall on deaf ears, go above your boss. I expect the words 'operational necessity' will find their way into the argument.

Totally agree with you, in our office we have a member of staff who has learning difficulties and despite the DSM telling managers he is not to be left on his own he has been left in the caller's office on his own on a few occassions

Heard that one many times. Maybe next time a postie is caught at home before his/her finish time, they should tell them that. Wouldn't go down well....

Apart from Royal Mails own in house health and safety regulations, The DOM is as much culpable as Royal Mail to ensure that his depot is run in accordance with UK Law in respect of health and safety in the workplace. There are many regulations that he is responsible for and should a member of staff be injured there should be a First Aider available to administer initial support. I would remind him of his responsibilities and if he is not prepared to change his methods of staffing the delivery office, I would report this matter to his superior, pointing out that you have made the DOM aware of your concerns but these have gone unheeded and you want this matter sorted out immediately. I would also ask the Health and Safety guy to support you and if the DSM fails to act, then whack in a grievance against both of them, with a copy to Moya Greene and Bob Gibson at CWU.

I know of a SB? who was on longterm sick. There was no question that he was genuinely ill and unable to work however as soon as he approached 6 months all of a sudden he was 'working from home'. RM is just like the Tory Party, they look after their own.

I like it when they can't get a walk covered. First they tell you it takes half the time to do that it actually does, then when you say you're not interested in any overtime today it takes five managers to deliver it. These Managers go out first chance they get and don't return back to the office. I once checked one of their bags and found three medium sized bundles, perhaps thirty minutes work at best that meant he made about two hours, this man got off delivery as soon as he could then became a Manager. Another one once said a while ago I can remember "a manager should lead by example", But the fact is if a Postie made two hours he would sack him. Lesson to learn ninety nine percent: 1) Lie 2) talk rubbish 3) con and fiddle 4) deserve no respect and finally 5) do what suits them on a add hoc basis day to day and to hell with you because I'm so wonderfully brilliant, well that's at least what they think.
