5 day week?

So we@ve all heard the CWU line that Royal fail want a five day working week, dropping Monday or Tuesday and losing 1/6 of us at a stroke. Does anyone else think RM are gonna just suggest Saturdays as OT only day to get us to cut the CWU out and get what they want? More importantly how many of the potential 5/6 that would survive vote for the saturdays off at the cost of the others?

I can't speak for the rest of the country but the office where I used to work must have had between 150-200 premises that didn't have a saturday delivery to start with,are RM suggesting that these premises will now only have 4 deliveries per week? I can see many of them making complaints as one of them is a major MOD establishment.

there is no way that Monday or Tuesday will be cut due to the amount of Businesses etc that would still want mail on their working days.

Saturdays could easily be lost with just a skeleton staff to deliver SG specials, you could even have 3 or 4 workers for whole postcodes working from one office to cover the lot.

it's the jobs loss issue i'd say. For me i would do cart wheels if sat could be dropped but that would be only if job losses were virtually non-exsisting. I'm sure there could be a way around job losses, things like buy-downs, no more recruiting while it adjusts ie not replacing people "retiring". slight reduction in hours, other things being introduced into working days (gas/electric meter readings?) possibly even half pay or similar for a few months and not working for those who might go for that. must be other things to throw into the arena.

My manager has already said he'd like to run Monday to Friday with just a skeleton crew on o/t doing Saturday guaranteed specials. Obviously it would take a change in parliament. When we get sold off so many jobs will go anyway that if it was proposed and a change to the USO was allowed the ones who keep there jobs would jumping for joy and not worrying about people who have gone......harsh but true I think. All staff on temporary contracts in our areahave been told they aren't getting renewed because of the mail centre closure.

I think in 10 years time when we have been privatised, and the USO eroded. Those still in the job will probably be on mon - fri working. What state our pay, t +c s will be in is a different question. Personally id jump at the chance.

I am amazed at the amount of selfish bastards on here that would see workmates down the road,just so they could have Saturday off,you knew we worked Saturdays when you applied for the job,get a grip.

does all the dsa come under the uso if they didnt have to deliver this not many letters have stamps on these days wouldnt take many staff to deliver the mail with stamps

when I started in the job 40 years ago they said we would get a 5 day week with a Saturday off,never going to happen in my lifetime.

Ideally i would like Saturdays to be optional and not COMPULSORY SA for everyone at my office! i'm sure there would be enough posties that would want to work them and cover those that didn't. That way everyones a winner.

I've worked for many years and F/T, but I voted no, as I like having a day off in the week. I can make appointments, go shopping etc. I need a break with the long day's doing 5 straight days knackers me

for me personally i would love saturdays off, would fit into my lifestyle really well. But i'd want that to be without job losses (if that could be done somehow)

Interesting responses. Not my idea btw just putting it out there. RM want to drop staff and cut costs and you will here more about this over the next few months from your CWU reps Im sure.
Personally id be for Mon-Fri if a way can be found to protect jobs. Natural wastage and buy downs or voluntary redundancies could work but I wouldnt like to see any staff go against their will.
