I've been a reserve for a while now, and just getting a bit fed up with it, being on different walks every day sometimes if your lucky for the week! And because of this i can't remember the last time I've seen a long weekend, its really been months now! I know this is a common problem, but is this just how it is and everyone's had to go through it? Then i see other reserves who've been there same time as me being left on walks for months! Its really not fair at all, is this just favoritism or what?
Is there anything i can do? or will saying something or talking to union just make things worst?

Well you should have a case if you haven't had a long weekend for months.
What contract are you on?
How does your office manage reserves all office are different.

being a reserve means your not signed to any walk therefore you may never get a long week end. This is a common problem in many offices but if reserves are being left on rounds demand a mini resign to stop this happening.

All are reserves get a long weekend plus a 4 day week every 6 weeks. They are all 40 hour contracts accept the sat staff.

the more you kick up/moan at least the boss would know you're not happy with it, and they may try and work the duties out a little more fairly. If you haven't flagged it up with the boss and others have and moaned they might try and sort those ones out before yours.

Get the reserves list in seniority order.
They pick duties in seniority order weekly.
A note is made of the days off.
If a lower seniority reserve is falling behind on having a Saturday off he jumps the queue and picks 1st if there is a Saturday off duty available.

Too many reservers are being had over,you need to get together and get something sorted.

I've been on the same walk for 14 months asa reserve. Apparently it's the longest walk in the office with the highest number of calls. Personally would rather be moved around, also have never had a long weekend.

if you can't get the manager to do something, then go to union rep, if nothing, then area rep. You are entitled to a Saturday off every 6 weeks at least. I work as reserve and get a week off every six weeks as we work 6 days a week Wallington walk system. Don't let the manager put you off.

Hi, I'm new to this and yes I'm a reserve, since starting earlier this year I have been moved daily from job to job and am expected to know where I'm going and finish on time, so far I have never managed to do this as at the end of my round I have to do absorption and this takes me at least another 30 mins. My question is; I always work over my contracted time and don't get paid any extra. Is this common with new reserves or am I just slow?

When I started I was on a training walk for 6 weeks until I had to train a newer recruit on it, who was then left on the walk for ten months... whilst I was pushed from pillar to post!

The moral of this story is "sheet happens, deal with it!"

Not claiming overtime as been told its just the nature of the job. I'm employed on the 30hr contract. Start at 8 so should finish at 2pm, not sure how I'm supposed to finish by 2pm and fit a 30 min break in somewhere. It just doesn't add up. I was sold a part time job at interview !!
