Low letterboxes.....

Increasing amount of new pvc doors being fitted with exteremely low letterboxes . With the constant health and saftey blurb on everything what's the Royal Mail stance on this? I thought there were EU directives on letterbox heights etc so they may well be illegal.

most seem to be extra stiff to get my mail through too!

Had Dr. and Mrs Dr. remodel their front door with a 'sh*t slit' at ankle height - Maybe they paid someone to think it through for them.. who knows..
so I P739 their BMJ mags, anything and everything..

Thanks to RM knackering my knees I have been unable to knee since last November! Still under going tests but no improvement in sight! So low level letterboxes are a nightmare and may well a reason for my particular issues. And why do low level boxes have the strongest springs of all boxes?

I also hate those boxes that have a sharp exposured spring hidden inside them ready to prick your finger as you force the mail through. Still at least their mail is covered in my blood!!

would be so much easier to have at least 3 inch thick letter boxes, at least A4 width, easy to push through, and around waist height.

even putting a bag down and back on your shoulder again each time, + bending down putting letters through must take it's toll over the years.

fairy tale world when people suggest if you follow it by the book you won't get injured.

Yes they are so annoying and so are ones that with loads of bristles that nearly bite your hand off!

I think I remember reading somewhere that all new letter boxes were supposed to be minimum of 1mtr above floor level, even the NHBC in 2005 recommended that developers adopt BS EN 13274

Letterbox heights
It may come as a surprise that about 3,000 postal workers suffer from back injuries every year. Not all of those come from delivering letters but some are attributed to stooping to deliver mail where the letterbox is in the bottom of thedoor, whilst carrying a satchel of mail. NHBC has been asked to make house builders aware of a European Standard (BS EN 13724) which recommends that the aperture for mail should be between 700mm and 1700mm above the doorstep. For groups of letterboxes,
typically in blocks of flats, the range is between 400mmand 1800mm.
Although this BS EN is not part of the NHBC Standards it is worth thinking about the height of the letterboxes in your next development, and spare a thought for the postal
worker who will be delivering the mail for many years to come

Perhaps lobbying the Government was the wrong tac, instead we may get a better result by going direct to the NHBC to get it enshrined in building regs for new builds.

Only in the past couple of weeks, had a house put a letterbox on the bottom of their new door, they had a lovely box before in the middle. Think they should be banned. To my knowledge Ireland banned them years ago.

You could always use your trolley then you wouldn't have to take your pouch off to bend down...

But yeah they are a pain and it would be good if something could be done.

Even worse is when they have a low box with a mat behind it so when you post the mail through, the mat catches the mail and blocks you posting it through. Genius idea.
