Delivering delayed letter.

Sometimes when getting back from delivery (firms driver) there will be the odd letter that turns up late from somewhere. Don't mind going out and delivering it it time Allows.
What I want to know,if there is no time to deliver it where do I stand.
Because we have this nice line manger who reckons I should still deliver it.
But I try to explain to him that some delivery staff have finished 2 hours ago give it to one of those if its that important, he spits the dummy out.

Tell him you're willing to deliver it...on overtime...and he can personally run the reason for extended delivery past the DSM.
See how long he keeps his job paying 30 minutes OT per letter.

If you have gone out on delivery having taken and cleared all mail at that point, with your boss full in the knowledge that this is the case, and are at your finishing time, there are two choices. You can say, I'm finished I'm off home, or as Fishtank says, pay me o/t and I'll go (if you want o/t). It's not like it's your fault the mail wasn't there when you left, nor did you leave early i.e. prior to your defined departure time. If they can't get the mail to you for your departure time, that was set up by them in agreement with CWU during revision, that's their problem, not yours. Tossers.

The point I was making was that, as long as you are working within the rules, you can refuse to go past your time. If, for example, the chap in question had left early to go out on delivery, even by a few minutes, and even in the managers full knowledge, he could technically be done for wilful delay, as the mail could have been there prior to his scheduled/defined departure time, but he wouldn't know that, as he wasn't in the office. If he is due to leave at say 10.00am, and then leaves at that time, any late mail is just that, and is the responsibility of management, not the postie, as they have failed to get the mail to him on time so he could take it out for delivery.

As for not having scheduled/defined departure times in your office, you should have. Just as start/finish times, meal breaks etc. should be. It should all be done within the revision process.
