I am just sending my bro ' his birthday card , in the top left corner of the envelope I have written in block capitals, " CARD ONLY !!! ".
It's a habit I have picked up from my mother but it occurs to me that ;
It is actually a bit offensive to any postie who reads it and if a potential thief was to see it , all it would do would be to make them more efficient, as they would not have to worry about nicking such cards.

Perhaps I just have too much time on my hands !
I'd bet money there's more dosh in say 1000 "card Only" cards than in 1000 just normal cards ie no extra message.
FWIW I have never sent cash through the post but for several years now (long before I became a postie) I always put birthday cards in their envelope and then another envelope (usually plain brown) that I put the address on. When sending to a child I never use terms like "master" but would put first name and surname.

When I send a card to NZ I always write 'Card Only' and when I receive anything it has the same written on. I'm sure it goes back from years ago and getting stamps for international items at the PO.

I think this is where it comes from. A letter up to 50g costs $2.30 so a bit of dosh can be saved by just sending a card.
