Deliveries suspended today in HP area

Royal Mail suspended all deliveries in the HP region this morning. To be frank, it was worse six weeks or so ago, but its the compensation culture you see!

Only some of the rurals were suspended in our area and TBH this is worse than last time - I had to dig two feet of snow down my drive to get my car out onto the road I almost phoned in but I couldn't bring myself to do it - but at my age it was a crap job at 4.30 in the morning in a howling blizzard

My view is that if today had been a Monday or a Tuesday, etc, we'd have been sent out. They didn't want the risk of vans being stuck down farm tracks on a Saturday.

No deliveries in L13-15 and 16 either yesterday or today.Got told by boss this morning to throw everything in then tie it up ready for Monday.Most were tied up by 9-9.30.He then informs us we'll be expected to clear out on Monday because we've had a dart today.When it was pointed out that overtime isn't compulsory he told us if we weren't prepared to sign to say we'd FINISH OUT on Monday then he'd be keeping us in the office until our official finishing time today,with nothing to do but sit round.Does anyone know what the official line is here,can he do that?

Yes he can - he has given you a choice therefore going home and banking hours is voluntary.

The Unions advice is to stay in the office until they release you.

As is usual with Royal Mail its not what they say thats wrong, but how they say it and invariably it gets peoples backs up.

Our office today the gaffer said "Ok lads if you want you can go home now and bank the hours, but if you don't hang back and we'll find stuff for you to do" - He, however knows full well that most will probably only go over an hour or so each day and on a short week there is no way he'll get all the banked hours back - he openly said he doesn't care as long as we are clear and up to date by the bank holiday he's fine with that.

So Banking without banking, and yes overtime without being paid - but its on a give and take basis and most seem okay with that. I'll reserve my opinion.

Also in an "L" postcode,,,,similar to you,,,and we were told thats what they had done to you,,,,,let u go an expect you to clear monday.

we did an we were told friday leaving work in the afternoon,,,,played there game got comfortable sat around,,,,,and again this morning,,,,our "person in charge" let us go after we`d prepped for monday,,,,telling us he expects it cleared monday LOL,,,what we can do,,,and what he expects,,,,welllll we`ll see

I've been given the choice of going early and paying them time back, or finishing on time quite a few times in recent years. I always finish on my time. I'm not at all interested in owing them hours, plus it does them a favour, which is reason enough to refuse.

I think its a reasonable offer hes making you. However, it was an OFFER, you could decline and stayed in office until finish time. I think some postmen want it both ways. Personally I would have stayed in and finished on time both days.

I'd of thought it was a good offer if there was something to do but to keep lads in the office with absolutely nothing to do I found it a bit petty,I've since found out that the manager who made the offer got off at 12.30,our finish time was 14.28.What's good for the goose...
