According to my Area Rep the answer is NO. The union has never agreed to banking hours or swings and roundabouts or whatever else some DOMs choose to call it. I prefer to call it 'theft' in relation to the docking of o/t under this system. Why the union don't take more of a stand against this practice, I really can't understand.

In our office ,there was posties who had maybe 5hrs overtime ,then on sat no mail came in managment said you can finish early but it would come of there overtime to make up shortfall of 39hrs ,its always being going on

In which case where is the incentive to work o/t? If I worked at your office I would work my hours and nothing more.

If you ask someone if they want to finish early on a saturday in return for hours already worked that's probably acceptable although not something I would advise.

If you tell someone you won't be paying them overtime because you can't put enough work in front of them on a saturday that's an entirely different story.

Answer...don't finish early even if it means sitting on your arse doing nothing.

That's not entirely true.
There are plenty examples of acceptable banking of hours.
The week off scheme being the most blatant.

In our situation yesterday no mail got threw ,most of us had a box of mail so of course we would finish early most of the boys forfeited there overtime cause they didnt want to hang around office but in my opinion once you have done your overtime surely they cant take that back

You are expected to work your hours. However if RM screw up and there is nothing to do then thats not your fault. I would complain to your union rep. If this practice is repeatedly going on it needs to be addressed.

It's might not be your fault however because there is no work available doesn't mean you can automatically go home.
If you are given the choice of staying or going home and you choose to go home obviously you leave yourself wide open.
If management decide to send you home,then it's their problem and you cannot be expected to forfeit anything.

I agree fishtank ,i stayed put ,but as said in earlier post its not worth working overtime if thats what they do .But that can backfire on doms !!!

I would agree with this principle. However for a manager to insist you stay until your time or you lose o/t, when there is nothing to do, sums up the contempt they have for us. So much for good working relationships and team moral. It works both ways though. The next time a few are off sick and hes looking for volunteers for o/t....Feck off!
