Deliver to a Neighbour - Possible scams

Was this man a fraud?

A while ago a man knocked on our door and said that a parcel had been delivered to our house that should have been delivered at his house. He had a royal mail card that said ' a parcel couldn't be delivered and it was delivered to number 18 ***** road'. We live at number 18 but haven't haven't signed for a parcel. I told him this and the funny thing is the number 18 didn't look right. It looked as if it could have been a 17 or another number and it had been altered. He went away and was also a bit vague about where he lived. He just said he lived a few doors down. I am beginning to think he found the royal mail card and is just trying it on to see if he gets lucky but i'm also wondering if he was just trying to get in the house to steal something. I left him at the door and wouldn't let him in. Has anyone heard of similar cons to this?

Bit strange - if I had a parcel left with one of my neighbours I'm not sure if I'd naturally show them the card (unless they asked and I'm not sure they would) - I'd probably just ask if they had a parcel for me. And I'd certainly say what number I lived at as they could have parcels held for a few houses.

Who gets the blame when it all goes wrong? The postie will. I dont care how much RM says about leaving parcels with neighbours, I wont do it. Especiallly on the more "common" parts of my walk.

Not according to the official statement. Losses are dealt with in the same way as any missing post.

I personally won't be doing it either, not unless I get an instruction in writing stating I will not be held responsible. But that won't happen. There will be some clause, no doubt, that will say it is up to us to assess the situation and make a decision on the spot. Not me. It's either a blanket instruction, i.e. we can do it everywhere unrestricted, or we can't do it anywhere. I will not use my discretion. It would only serve to bite me in the arse.

i will only give it to a neighbour if they actually come out and offer to take it, i will never actively seek a neighbour!

I'll start doing it when they allow us far more than one minute to deliver to a property.

Sometimes a neighbour isn't exactly a neighbour though, one of mine has opted into this, and the recipient isn't even in the same street !, I go to the recipients house before hers, and you never know if she is in or out. Should I really have to go back on my walk to her "nominated neighbour".

I've also seen a lot of those opt out stickers appearing, after I said I'd never seen one, I must have about 20 on my walk now. Is this a sign that people don't actually trust their neighbours ?

Why can’t I nominate a neighbour I would like my items left with if I am not at home?

The set up and maintenance of customer delivery preferences for all UK addresses is not a viable option. Therefore it is not possible for you to specify who you would like their items delivered to if they are not in.

Also its not an Opt in service - its a Universal service that you can Opt out of.
