Conduct or Counselling/Retraining
We've a line manager wanting to Conduct everyone who makes an error rather than have a chat and offer some sort of retraining. What is the best way of dealing with him? The most recent problem was one of the posties put an item through an open window(no one home) and saw the item land on the floor. The customer is saying it landed in the toilet and broke loads of stuff on the way. I've seen the packaging which is intact with no watermarks on it. The postie was interviewed without me being there and given a 1 year serious on their record. The manager appears to be wanting to make a name for himself. Is it best to recommend to staff that the grievance procedure is the way to go?

And make sure your members appeal everything, especially the ridiculous one you quoted.
• an employee will have the right to appeal against any discipline penalty imposed
• at all stages of the formal procedure (i.e.excluding counselling) the employee will have the right to be represented by the relevant union representative or be accompanied by a friend from the same work location.
And make your concerns about misuse of the conduct code known to the Area Rep in writing..

Re: Conduct or Counselling/Retraining
It is likely he is trying to make a name for himself, but it also my personal belief that there is now a company wide policy to utilise the conduct code to the max to speed up the process of cutting jobs. It happened the last time we had large scale job cuts, and I think it's happening now. It saves RM money in quite large amounts in relation to pensions, EVR/VR payouts etc.
Sometimes, I wish I wasn't a Rep.

theres nothing better than a failed postie who's a lino or a dom who hasnt done a delivery for many years. or a graduate who's never done a postal grade job. and they are telling you how to do your job correctly in a councelling session!! a complete farce you just couldnt write it could you. no wonder the company is in the mess it is!!

we just had one went to far one day threatened loads of people said in front of the office it didnt matter if we reported him as nothing would be done ( i will say that grievances do not seem to worry any managers and they dont care about them ) but he had at least 6 bullying and harrassment, and grievances taken out against him in the same day ,then he just didnt turn up the next week he was moved to another office and is apparently now covering other depots in our area.
so it looks like they can have an effect but only if a lot of posties get together

Re: Conduct or Counselling/Retraining
Technically, they did listen. They just decided you and/or your colleagues were wrong. Or, in reality, they read them, didn't care, moved him/her temporarily to let things quieten down, and sent the boss back. Did you actually believe the other manager would find there was a case to answer? Even if they had, it would have been a minor one, a token gesture. Managers back each other up, only very rarely do they not.tolkien wrote:tolkien wrote:Stormproof wrote:We've a line manager wanting to Conduct everyone who makes an error rather than have a chat and offer some sort of retraining.
