Family friendly policies

Post by revpro1 »

I work in admin, since 2008 I have been working a four day week. I asked and was allowed to condense my hours, this was due at the time because my son was young and my health was/is not good.

Same old story, new manager arrives and wants me to work a 5 day week, which due to my deteriorating health, I do not want to do, I live quite a way from the mail centre, the drive is now very painful, and the extra day away from my computer , I have Carpal tunnel, is very helpful in eliminating some of the pain.

Can he insist on me returning to a 5 day week? Or will I have to transfer?

Thanks

I think that family friendly/flexible working comes under a different process to adjusted duties due to health issues. The flexible working policy at http://www.royalmailchat.co.uk/communit ... 36&t=34292 is fairly recent so hopefully is still current

What treatment are you receiving for your ailment? Is it managed with medication or have you had surgery? Have you considered ill health retirement?

At the moment just strong painkillers, but the ATOS guy thing I should see my GP re the operation.

I am wondering about ill health retirement, but unsure what that entails, ie payout , etc.

My sister in law is a nursing sister and had the same problem which got progressively worse until she had the operation and she is now fine. It would be about 15 years ago and she was about 39 then.

i would involve atos and see if you come under the equality act, and the business will try and make reasonable adjustment to your duty. with ill health retirement the financial return is nothing special.

I doubt your manager could force you back to a five day week if you have been on a four day week for five years!
As for the carpal tunnel, I have suffered with it too and I know how painful it is not to mention the lack of sleep.
Get the op done, it's day surgery and in my case was a complete success & will mean 2-4 weeks off work, unfortunately it's now in my other hand so I'm having that one done too, while you are waiting get a splint from your gp, this will help at night as it will stop you from bending your wrist and causing the numbness & pain.
