Front line colleagues can take simple steps to stamp out crime

Colleagues across Royal Mail have had some major successes in the fight against street crime, but we all need to remain vigilant.

Over the last five years incidents of street crime have been reduced significantly where vehicles and pouches have been involved but trolleys are still targeted by criminals.

In the reporting year 2008/2009 there were 300 incidents where pouches were stolen either from official drop points, pouch boxes or where pouches were left unattended.

Thanks to a range of measures this figure has dropped to 64 this year to date.

These measures include making pouch boxes more secure, reducing the use of drop points and a programme of engagement with frontline staff around unattended pouches.

Vehicle drivers have also been reminded about the threat of crime and the security steps they should be taking. This includes not leaving keys in the ignition or windows or doors open. This has led to a 35% drop in vehicle-related crime since March 2009.

As new delivery methods are introduced criminals are increasingly targeting trolleys,which are increasingly used instead of pouches.

Royal Mail is working closely with trolley suppliers to make them more secure but incidents of this nature have risen by 35%.

In North London a criminal gang was responsible for 40 incidents of theft of or from high capacity trolleys over a period of three months. Vital information from front delivery colleagues helped the security team identify those involved.

Martin Dunckley, Director of Security Risk says, ‘This highlights how important it is for delivery colleagues and Security to work together to tackle crime against Royal Mail. Overall the reduction in incidents is a fantastic achievement but we must remember that criminals will always find new ways of targeting us, so continued vigilance is essential.’

Martin says remembering the Six Key Pipeline Security Standards is vital. These are:
•Mail is not left unattended or insecure at anytime
•All staff have an appropriate level of security awareness
•Unauthorised access to Royal Mail sites is prevented
•Special Delivery (SD) and high risk mail is afforded appropriate protection
•Supervisory checks to safeguard mail are effectively deployed
•Equipment used to convey mail affords the appropriate level of security at all times.

leaving mail and parcels unnatended when u do loops for say half an hour.Wonder how long it would take to break in and empty for the average thief about 5 minutes.

When you have a l/w trolley and your houses you deliver to are 40 metres to the gate and they have shingle drives which some of my roads do , what are you supposed to do??
How can you make a l/w trolley secure ??
OK you can take 2 bags off the l/w trolley and carry them to all the houses but if you started doing that on all the occasions you would never get finished.
Better still get rid of the stupid trolleys and go back to what we did before

During the planning stage those loops so affected should have been identified and risk assessed - if necessary smaller 8kg pouch bags and smaller loops may have been the better option.

With the amount of parcels we are carring in the l/w trolleys we need BIGGER bags
