Delivery Office shut when return from round

Since P/L started and P/L pairings are finishing later, many pairs are coming back and the Delivery Office has shut.
Ours shuts at 2.30pm and the DOM always leaves well before that because of meetings or other reasons.
We for example ended yesterday with 60 parcels returned including 5 specials plus 2 PDA's left in the van overnight in an unsecure carpark out of town in an Industrial Estate. My driver and other drivers have to put the car keys through the letterbox .
Surely with postmen working later and later RM should have a member of staff working in the cage to secure items out of the returning vans.
Another inconvenience is that the PDA's left in vans overnight dont get charged enough when you start the next day.
The other thing is that on days where we are off the following day what happens if a special item goes missing that was left in the van as I dont feel comfortable leaving specials not being returned to the cage?

thats a complete joke to be allowed to happen. sack the dom is the simple answer to solve that problem. as he should have a lino or members of staff in the office until the last van has returned back and pda,specials, packets are all booked back in. a nice email to moya would be a nice treat for your dom explaining the shambolic set up the dom has in place for his office

Our office is closed most Saturdays when we get back and all our returns and collections from Post Offices (including collected Specials) are left in the van untill Monday. Dont you just love this park and loop modernisation!
And yes the managers all know about it but ignore it because we have used the PDA\s to collect the specials from the PO\s so it doesnt show up.
If only the regulator knew!

Don't know about others, but in my office anyone, and I mean anyone including managers, would be suspended and sacked for leaving mail in a van overnight.

There should be someone in your office until every one of you and your colleagues have returned and unloaded all mail to the appropriate place(s). There is in our office.

I would also point out that, whilst they know and turn a blind eye to it now, as soon as it goes wrong i.e. one of the vans is broken into and mail stolen, you will end up paying the price for it. Even though many of you will testify to this being the norm, and management being fully in the know, the bosses will deny it and throw you to the wolves. After all, they would say why hasn't the issue been raised before? You need to speak to your colleagues and get support from them, and as a whole, raise the issue and get it sorted. Asking for an instruction in writing that this is what they want you to do when the office is closed. See how fast they refuse that request!!

Happened to someone at our place once. He parked his van right outside the gate walked home and took van keys with him. Was his day off the next day. They called him in the morning. DOM had to drive to his house to pick up the keys lol. Can't blame him for doing what he did.

Delivery OPG’s will at their sole discretion determine when, and where, it is appropriate to deliver to a neighbour and their decision will be final.

National Guidelines:

Delivery OPG’s will be free to use their initiative to decide which neighbour an item shall be left with, based on their local knowledge and experience.

I don't think I take out 60 in a week never mind bring that many back in one day.

Well then, you haven't got a proper duty, I usually get 40+ attendance calls a day with Christmas doubling that number.............I've heard that some offices only get 1 packet bag a day but I thought it was an urban legend

Post- delivery methods walks based on 17/18 attendence calls per 500 delivery points, with just ~5 "nafl"s?

Every walk tyically gets 2 sacks parcels a day here outside Xmas (typically 4+ at Xmas), with typically 2-4x that attence rate! And "they" try to play the "performance issue" card as to why walks are not achievable on time.

Under no circumstances should any of us be leaving failed mail in HCTs or vans overnight because we have no access to the depot or a "man in the van" when we return from delivery. As far as I'm aware, it should be signed over to a post office or taken to the processing centre if there are no options at the depot. If you know when your depot options finish and do not want this extra hassle, cut off, cover your own back. If something goes wrong with unagreed overnight mail, it will be you being shown the door, not your managers.
