Opportunities for overtime

Starting work soon as a part time postie at my local DO. On a 20hr/week contract - during the interview the DOM told me that although it was a 20hr/week contract, there would often be extra work that needed doing, and he also mentioned that I would be able to do overtime at a few of the other local DOs as well.

How true is this? How much OT is there to be had?

Started 4 years ago on a 25 hour contract.first week did 30 hours which is the lowest weekly hours ive worked and probably averaged mid 40s over the 4 years.However this does vary from office to office depending how many people want the extra work(there is very few at ours).I would guess that if you put yourself up for overtime most days you will get at least mid 30 hours a week.Hope this helps?

Wow 4 years!!!! you should claim for a full time job by now. Then you will then get full holiday pay and increase contributions into your pension. Get in touch with your local union rep or area rep if you have nobody local, and get them on the case. Your working full time for part time benefits, which can not be right.

It might not be right, but a large proportion of the workforce suffers under these unfair contracts. You end up working when you are ill, and generally never having time off as it hits you in the pocket. Victorian.

Royal Mail give you low hours contract and except you to work more hours and get paid for overtime to make the different but when you are on week off or holiday or ill you will only get 20 hours instead of full hours (let say 34 hours) and Royal Mail will save money with lower pay and lower bonus rather give you the full hours contract.

Always OT in my office, getting paid for it however is a totally different question.

Sounds promising, then - very pleased to have got the job but the hours are quite few at the moment, so it's good to know there will probably be plenty of OT to be had.

The sick / holiday pay makes sense, I suppose, as they only pay for contracted hours - must be a bit of a shock to the bank account come holiday time, though

So, I reckon I should make it known to my DOM that I'm after as many hours as I can get at the moment, and hope that eventually I'll get a contract with more hours when my contract comes up for renewal - from what I've seen of him the DOM seems friendly enough.

How's that sound for a plan?

Lol i wish! The union rep is as useful as accrington stanleys back four and me getting a full time contract at this doghole is as likely as shergar winning this years derby

I think there has been some confusion here.

If I read it right travis is already a permanent employee albeit on 25 hours. I think pete has confused that with a Fixed Term Contract which in law after 4 years without being dismissed automatically in law becomes Permanent.

Think your opinion of him will change soon enough. If not, congratulations, you've found one of the only, if not the only, decent DOM in the country. If it does turn out that way, let us all know and we'll all transfer in ASAP.

Well I haven't actually started yet, so I'll let you know - I've only seen him at the interview and via e-mail correspondence, and he seems OK - but we'll see!

Another question about OT - how do I know if there's extra work going in my DO / other local DOs if I'm not there on that day? I might be (don't know for certain yet) on 3 days a week, but it'd be good to do some work on the other days for the extra dosh. Would I ring the DO in the morning, or just drive in, or what?

Problem your going to have depends on what time you start. For example our PT's come in around 9am and any sickness OT cover has already been arranged.

We have a list of known OT coming up and you can place your name against these in advance.

Other than that i would suggest you do not come in early and book extended delivery if required.

Quite often any OT will be known about in advance so you'll be asked in advance. If you do plenty and get a reputation for hammering the OT then the managers will come and ask you before you need to go and ask them. If any overtime comes up unexpectedly on your day off then just make sure your mobile's switched on. If you want a decent kip make sure it's turned off. As for other offices then the first time the chance comes up make sure the other DOM's or line managers have your number.

There's also a good chance that you'll get stuck on a stinker of a duty that takes you past your hours and then made to feel like s**t for booking the OT that you've earned on it.
