Getting your own permanent walk?

Is there a time limit/seniority before a former RM Casual now permanent can ask for their own walk?

Reason I ask I have been with RM for four years, the past two as a now as permanent. But i do a different walk every day and often sent to other local offices. Do I have any grounds to ask or insist on a permanent walk based on my time in the job, or is it down to management? staff quota/arrangements etc?

I know people in 10 years that don't have a duty so you'll just have to wait until one comes up and then try to sign for it.

if a duty becomes vacant it should normally go up for pick and the senior applicant should secure. usually.

Good luck, I've been a cover for 5.5 years and I'm still nowhere near getting my own walk. There are numerous more senior colleagues in the same situation in my d.o.

You might be lucky after your revision. We now have postie who has less than 1 year service with their own walk.

Post-revision walks are categorised by or earmarked on hours: so you will have certain number of ft (majority), some 32 or some variation (35/36), some 27.5 and some will be 24 hours (a handful?). So it depends on how far you seniority is in your contract hours group.

E,g the top on 27.5 might be less than 3 years but will get to pick probably a good walk. And the last in 32hr or 39hr will probably become a Reserve.

You cannot simply go and ask; it will achieve nothing, unless there is a vacancy and even so...

well there are some former casuals who are now permanent and have their own walks who started around the same time as me. I know the bidding system for walks, but in our office there are several walks that do not have permanent postmen/women allocated to them for years. The customers dont like it because there are always errors, miss sorts and other problem. They are divided up for overtime, drivers, late staff etc. I will find out how some were given own walks

There is also the possiblity that, if you are good at your job, knowledgeable (you know loads of walks) and reliable, they may want you to remain in the role you are doing, as it makes the managers job easier. They know when someone is on A/L or S/L, they can cover it without trouble with you.

Even then, if you do get you own walk, they still can put you on a different walk at the drop of a hat anyway, and there isn't anything you can do about it.

With seniority for picking walks etc,if you was say a casual for a year and then taken on permanent with 4 years so far, would you have 4 years or 5 years seniority in total?

All service within an appropriate grade, whether on permanent or temporary basis, will count for
seniority purposes, with the exception of any periods worked on a casual contract, or during a career
break or sabbatical.
