Our modernisation programme plays a big part in helping deliver our strategy

This week, on RMTV, Mark Higson, managing director, operations and modernisation, tells us (Link not working ffs) what progress we’ve made and what we still have to do.

Mark says: ‘We’re making great progress on safety. We’ve reduced serious injuries by more than 50% in the last three years.

‘We’re doing well on quality too. We had a great Christmas and finished first in the MoneySavingExpert.com survey for customer satisfaction – above all the other parcel competitors.’

Modernisation changes

Mark says: ‘We’ve completed nine mail centre closures. We know how hard that is for many of the people involved.

‘We completed well over 300 delivery modernisation revisions in 2012, so again, that programme is progressing.’

He says we are making continuous efforts to understand what the really key things are to making revisions work for employees and for the business.

We’re at a pivotal moment, he added, fuelled by the growth in parcels.

‘To achieve our strategy, we need external money. It will enable us to invest in the business and secure as many good-quality jobs as possible. The Government doesn’t have the cash to spend on us. We have to find it elsewhere.’

If I may be so bold its quite telling that you emphasised "serious injuries" as by their nature the instances of such incidents are quite low anyway so even a reduction of 1 or 2 will have a large effect on the percentages. Also without raw figures, stating a percentage reduction is meaningless.

We've reduced serious injuries by 50% but have no idea what the percentage increase will be for musculoskeletal injuries that we have and will cause by implementing untried and untested new delivery methods.

Yes they do - a final salary scheme with a choice of accrual rates.

Frankly Mr HIgson, I couldn't care less. However hard we work to achieve your targets we shall never share in its success. Where as you and your cronies lap it up. You don't give a toss about us workers as you have displayed in negotiations with our union. You seem to trivialise the problem of bullying and harassment in delivery offices. This is largely caused by your unachievable workloads, enforced by incompetent managers obsessed with chasing their performance bonuses. Please don't treat us with contempt and then expect anything but cynicism in return.
