On Saturday a colleague lost a PDA, does anyone know what the repercussions might be? or had any experience of being conduct coded over this? Hopefully he's found it.

know a bloke who got 2 year serious, know some who got zilch. there is a pda agreement, worth a read up if your going before the beak.

the guideline covering the procedure to follow in the event of loss and the PE Doc covering the national agreement. There is no specific reference in the agreement to loss as we agreed that this would be dealt with in line with normal procedures for such occurrences. However we did agree that such instances should be dealt with sensibly and sensitively recognising that in most cases there will be genuine reasons for loss or damage. In the first instance has the procedure in the guideline been followed?

If this case looks like it will become a witch hunt then involve your area rep and Div rep. In the meantime we will make the relevant manager at national level aware of your

It is very important that he or she informs their line manager at the 1st opportunity. Ideally this should have been done saturday but when they returned to the office there was no manager to inform. Right.

Monday morning this needs to be reported saying just that ^^^

lost mine,told id just get a verbal,then customer brought it in 5, yes 5 days later said he found it on his wheeliebin ,happy and fuming at same time. verbal never happened .

So what's the issue here? I mean if there is the potential for disciplinary action if a PDA is lost what is the offence and what's the difference between losing one and getting it back and losing one forever as far as being disciplined is concerned.

Rinky seems to have breathed a big sigh of relief (understandably) because a member of the public found the PDA. That doesn't mean that the original reason for the problem went away though, the PDA was still mislaid.

So again, what is the issue with losing a PDA? Is a permanent loss worse than a temporary one and if so why? Are PDA's a valuable and attractive item on the open market and if so could a 'loss' of one be interprepreted as a possible theft or would the 'charge' be one of negligence or carelessness in handling Royal Mail property? I guess that might be the answer, if there wasn't a decent deterrent against the loss of one we might lose more than we do already, but what IS the deterrent?

Does anyone know what happens if you DO lose one forever? (nearly done it myself a couple of times!!)

COST! A lost item has to be replaced at a cost and a level of inconvenience.

The punishment is not important as long as RM does not need to shell out. A ticking off if misplaced and A ticking off and some reprimand (not sack - suspended whatever) if lost forever.

In the same way as perverting the cause of justice will not (normally) often result in a custodial sentence but to lie and lie nwhen faced with your crime and incur expenses for the state and inconvenience for Police, CPS and Courts might just get you 8months in Prison

Maybe this gives more clarity, section 19 of the Conduct Code

19 LOSS OF OR DAMAGE TO PROPERTY
All losses of property (including cash or valuables) or damage to official property must be reported to the manager. Where loss or damage is clearly attributable to negligence or carelessness, or is deliberate, disciplinary action may be taken.

Some divvy gives me a PDA, then tells me that if I drop it/damage it, or lose it, ( all very likely given the manic nature of this job these days) it's conduct code time......I'll say, thanks, but no thanks, I'll stick with the 739 cards.

I've heard that they cost about £1k each and were 2nd hand from PF (PF use the same ones so the RM group probably got a job lot). When we all get the new PDAs that we're meant to get they'd better be far better quality and more reliable then the current "bricks"
