packet template for trolly walks

we have just had an indoor revision.. 14 sorting frames down to 5 new ones with snazzy elastic strips on the back, individual yorks for every walk etc.. first day back in after the changes, and the packet template was on the bin outside, well i picked it up and brought it back in, next day it was gone again and has not been seen since. when confronting the manager he said it no longer applies.. surely this is bullsh** right. is this not part of the agreement?? now we are having packets of any size thrown at us, when i explain to the manager that i have to use a bag for a section, and the packet wont fit in it, he says push trolly round, if i pushed the trolly everywhere it would take 6 hours!! can a union rep on here let me know if this manager is acting beyond his authority????

The point (for them) of a delivery methods revision is to do away as much as possible with dedicated packet duties - once up the garden path.
If the packet fits in the trolley, it goes in the trolley.

If the trolley is out of your site for more then a few minuets (the exact times are mentioned in other threads), then don't you have to take the entire contents of the trolley out and carry it with you anyway including that packet?

If you're not using a trolley when you should be using one then:

* You make the walk look more do-able then it really is
* If you get an injury when using a bag when you should be using a trolley the dom will probably throw you to the wolves

What I do is try and jam everything in my trolley for that loop and just plod along sometimes if it's a light day and their isn't many oversize parcels the driver will come and help you as his loops are smaller than yours,some drivers won't they just sit in the van and get fat,don't worry keep plodding till your time or book the overtime,if a driver doesn't offer to help leave him to empty the van when you get back just grab your kit and walk away.

Sorry for the hijack....re emptying the trolley if leaving it for more than a given time. Surely here's a limit to how much one is allowed to carry in that situation?

The time limit is 2/5/10 minutes that a HCT can be left unattended and out of sight while locked to an immoveable object, depending upon the risk assessment of your delivery area.

This means that you should be diverting off delivery while delivering to many blocks of flats for example, to get the HCT back in sight within the applicable time limit and then resume delivery.

If leaving the HCT for longer unattended, it must be emptied of all mail. As far as I'm aware, nobody should be carrying more than 5Kg on their shoulder with a pouch ( ), so realistically the only likely places you could empty the HCT of mail is at an official bag drop; shortly before a bag drop replinishment; towards the end of the walk (depending on how many failed items you have).

Don't forget to take all specials with you when you lock up the HCT.

As regards oversize/overweight packets, there must be a limit, but it is kept a closely guarded secret by any in the know! Too many bulky parcels above an adult shoe box and you will use up the storage capacity of the HCT well before you follow the frame and reach your bag drop. Items are pulled out of the HCT without being able to follow proper lifting technique, we are bending at the hips/lower back to retrieve items, so there is a real risk of short term and long term injury if carrying weighty parcels. Not to mention that the heavier the HCT, the more inertia you have to overcome to stop/start the HCT, putting strain on the body (especially lower back).

Personally, I would do away with HCTs and modify/improve the LWT design, leaving all delivery points that need the HCT to be locked up for van drivers to deliver. This would immediately take ~25Kg strain off the walker (difference in weight between HCT and LWT); keeping mail far safer in the van while doing the likes of flat blocks; saving time because vans do not need to back in sight every 2 minutes in a high risk area.

I wouldn't worry too much because in the future we'll all have single vans.
