Going back a few years when 'Job and Finish' was widespread on the late shift in Mail Centres it seemed to me that as a non-financial incentive it worked quite well. The added incentive of finishing a little early often was the difference between a unit clearing or failing and whilst the system was not completely fair on everyone it did generate an atmosphere of give and take that seems to be missing, particularly from management today.

Whilst the management view is that the 21st century OPG should now work every minute of his/her paid for hours and then some more if needed this approach is not always maintained when it comes to the managers themselves. There is a quite a lax approach to time keeping for support managers such as planners who simply need to attend units for specific tasks or meeting and then head off home as soon as they can. I can appreciate that their roles are different but it seems that there is more than a little hypocrisy in the lack of attendance time control when it comes to some grades. How many OPGs return to a DO to find all of the linos and the DOM nowhere to be seen?

But the thick rush round start before your time dont take your break brigade have still not got there heads around job and finish ended when p&l started. Now you work your hours on deliveries because if you dont they just give u more lapsing time to wake up with job and finish its long gone

They don't discourage it in our office as the managers mainly leave the office before the delivery staff. If there are any issues about cutting off then this is dealt with before staff leave for delivery with part timers or agency workers being drafted in. If you time it correctly you can do a smaller delivery span getting paid help and returning back to the office just after the DOM and DIM have left for home

No, doing a hybrid delivery and collections duty means i don't finish till the end of my time, last box is at the end of shift. You shouldn't be allowing the people who only deliver to finish early while others never get to. It isn't fair i tells ya .

Not in my office. It's expected that you finish early on a mon and tues in order to work free rest of the week. How can there be swings and roundabouts (flexing) if you never finish early?

Of course, job and finish doesn't mean finishing early. It means going home as soon as you finish, and most of the non-drivers do this every day. They either go straight home after last letter and even get a lift from their driver, who has to go back to the office with the trolleys, bags, P739's etc.

In my office whenever anyone finishes early (on the odd occasion it snows in hell), they are immediately given extra work to do, thus no incentive to get on with it, so no one gets on with it, and hence there are continuous failures.

Of course, there are also the double standards with managers. In my unit, they take a 1 or 1 and a half hour break, pop out to shop for a hour at a time, and go home early on a Saturday by up to 4 hours claiming they haven't had a break during the week. But if one of us makes so much as 5 minutes they make sure they get it back.

There is no room for job and finish IMO. Work to your time, follow the rules, and they cant touch you. Or give you more. Or cut jobs. Always cover your back, or they'll stick a knife in it.

Its job and knock still at our office (we havn't had our revision yet). We go out do our delivery and its very very rarely that any one cant complete. We always finish before our official finish time and there isnt anything else left for us to do anyway so we go home.
