CSS OPERATOR'S

I'm currently on a H.C.T. walk and have a chance to go on night's as a CSS operator.I wondered if the grass was greener so to speak as i've never done night's before.

For DOs it's probably basic + night allowance + defined area + delivery supliment

Yes the money is good, you get to work nights, it's a lot better than deliveries, but, and there has to be a but, you'll think your job is safe, you'll get used to the duty and attendance pattern and, if you are in a DO, after a couple of years you'll find the machines are being taken out and you're going back onto deliveries, right at the bottom of the pile.

It's quite hard work and will keep you on your toes until you get used to it but if you work with a decent bunch of operators then there are worst jobs and the pay is quite decent. The training is reasonably straightforward and the vast majority of machines are quite reliable for RM mech kit. In some units the duty structure is a little tight against the workplan and like many other things RM contingency planning is not always that well thought through. Most DOMs (or MPU managers are they like to be called ) will leave you alone so long as the units clears and the figures are OK.

I wouldn't go back on deliveries thats for sure,
compared to when i was on delivery, the gaffer now thinks the sun shines out of my @rse and generally just leaves me alone.
i've seen posties try working the nightshift and quit it after just 1 night, so it isn't for everyone,
the only criteria for working on CSS is that you are fast, reliable (if you have a poor sick record, forget it), have no joint trouble (if you have arthritic knees/wrists etc, you won't last), and can work unsupervised.
the attitude of my gaffers toward me changed over night when i went on the machines, from being on my back incessantly ....they now leave me (and the other night staff) alone to do the job, this may be a reason as to why some CSS operators are stabbed in the back and whinged about by posties, though i don't get that impression at my place, i still get along with most people.
