A colleague lost a special delivery today

Just had a phone call from a colleague telling me he lost a special delivery today. He definitely put it in his van and remembers seeing it while out on delivery. But when it came to actually delivering the special, he couldn't find it.

He reported the incident via a phone call to the office straight away and spoke to the manager when he got back to the office. The manager told him he could face the sack ?

He is fairly new to RM, less than 1 year service and has a clean record.

How bad could this get ?

The IB have no powers whatsoever to search your house. The postie in this case obviously gave permission.

The IB should also be discrete.

He most probably did give permission because he had nothing to hid. The searching of the bins happened because he told me himself, so no discretion there

it all depends on the DIM in reality.

has the postie been back to where it should have been delivered and knocked the door to ask if he delivered it there?

I have done this myself although it was a few years ago but still inside my first year as a postie, I found I had delivered the letter when I put the p739 through the door.

told my DIM as soon as I realized I did'nt have it on my return to the DO.

He did a quick drive around but couldn't find it and like I said, he reported it straight away. The guy is really worried about this and is looking at me to help because I have been voted as the new office rep, but I'm not official yet because the area rep hasn't been in touch with me, even though the application was submitted about 3 weeks ago and I have not had my training.

I have just become our unit's rep and the Area rep never got back to me at all, so I emailed the regional secretary instead and got the ball rolling myself. was sent nomination paper and returned it, waited the stipulated 28 days and was duly elected on Monday of this week :)

I am also yet to receive any formal training but I am looking forward to doing so and serving the members in the best way possible.

It depends on what was in the special, was it high value? Money going to a bank/travel agent or was it just important paperwork. This will make a difference, also has the customer complained on non delivery or has the sender complained?

It is entirely possible that they could be suspended and eventully dismissed. But there are a lot of things that will affect that. It should be obvious to the DOM that this is a genuine mistake, he informed them at the earliest opportunity, they may ask to search their house/car/locker etc but as they haven't stolen anything they shoudn't have anything to fear from this. Could be charged with something like failure to safeguard mail. Until you/they know more, following investigations, it just isn't possible to give any definative answer, but it is a possibility for them to be sacked. Hopefully it will turn up at some point.

depends on office, type of contract hes on and staffing levels.

My dad received a special delivery for an item off ebay a few years ago, value less than £10, seemed a bit odd for a very low value item to be sent by special. So yours may possibly be low value. Not sure if that makes any difference.

Was it a letter or a parcel? sure it wasn't posted through the right door by mistake?(as in not seeing it was a special)
